Hand, Foot, and Mouth

I think DS has hand, foot, and mouth disease. He had a low grade fever for two days with no other symptoms (except general grumpiness). I took him to the pedi yesterday and she said his ears looked a little red so it could be the start an ear infection. Well, last night I started to notice little scabby blisters around his mouth and throughout today they appeared on his palms, the bottoms of his feet, and the backs of his legs around the diaper line. We will call his pedi in the morning to confirm but it fits all of the symptoms of HFM.

If your LO has had this, how long did it get worse before it got better? Anything I can try at home to soothe the sores? He's waking up about every half hour through the night.

  • DD had it last fall.  Not much you can do to treat it...just have to ride it out.  But it is highly contagious so I would limit taking him outside.  And disinfect disinfect and disinfect your house.   If he has them in his mouth, popsicles are soothing.  Tylenol/Ibuprofen for pain.  DD's blisters/sores lasted for about a week.  Good luck!!

  • IMO there is nothing you can do but make him comfortable with advil or tylenol.  It was a week of hell and then he was feeling better but he looked like a leper.  His hands and feet peeled for a month after.  It was gross.  During the period he is in ....ie fever, discomfort is the contagious period so he has to stay home and wash everything just to be sure.  GL!

  • Yes that it was it sounds like. As a pp said, not a lot that can be done for it. DD had it back in September. I gave her oatmeal baths, fed her popsicles, pudding, jello and tried to keep her drinking water. Shakes were good too. Sorry your LO is going through this, it was not fun. Hoping for a speedy recovery for your boy!
  • My daughter had it this winter. Her blisters really weren't too bad - didn't have any in her mouth and only a few on her hands and feet. I'd say 3-4 days before she was mostly back to her normal self. We kept her out of DC for a week. She got sent home with a fever on Monday morning and we went her back the following Monday. Oatmeal baths seemed to help a bit and pain reliever helped her sleep.

  • Thanks for the tips. He had a few new blisters today but thankfully only a couple inside his mouth. He is eating and drinking better today so I think he must be feeling better. I will try the Oatmeal bath tonight to see if that helps soothe him a bit and keep up with the Tylenol at night. Thanks again!

  • DS has it right now. He is at the end stages and feels better but still has the rash. We thought he was getting is two year molars when it started.
