CD moms--question about starting CDs with the belly button stump

So we are planning to CD and DS is 10 days old now with his belly stump still fairly securely intact. We were/are planning on using disposables until it falls off completely. We have some BG newborn AIOs which is supposed to go under the belly button, but they don't because DS is only 6 lbs. our other CDs are homemade newborn ones from my mom that were also designed to sit under the belly button, but once again DS is too tiny. Pinstripes and polka dots says it's ok to start CDing with the belly button stub intact because the diaper will just sit over it and cushion it, and the risk of infection is low since poop is unlikely to go that high and their pee is fairly pure. Something on Abby's Lane said the same thing. Did anyone do this? Running low on disposables and don't feel like buying more. What did you do with your LOs?

Re: CD moms--question about starting CDs with the belly button stump

  • Our diaps sometimes sat just below and sometimes came above the stump. I just made sure the stump was positioned so it wouldn't hurt her (i.e. bent back unnaturally). We never had a problem and she never seemed uncomfortable.

The BG XSs are super cute and work very well! Tessa slept in a blossom colored one last night :)

We started cloth diapers the day after getting home from the hospital and he hasn't seemed to be bothered. A few of the diapers cover the cord stump, but I just fold down the top of the really big ones and he doesn't seem uncomfortable at all.

Fyi, I'm using Kissaluvs cloth diapers and Thirsties covers. I really like the Thirsties x-small, they seem to fit our 6 lb 13 oz. son well.

  • So far we've been using ones that snap down under the stump. My main concern would be rubbing since CDs fit pretty snug.
  • We're using cloth with the stump. Most of ours go under or I just put them on kind of loose around the waist.

  • I waited until the stump fell off, but luckily it fell off pretty early for us. Most of my NB diapers have a little snap to fold down the top to avoid it, and I'm still using that until her belly button is completely healed. My baby's kinda big though so the diapers are probably fitting her differently than yours. I think the main concern is that the stump should stay clean and dry - I would be extra vigilant about changing wet diapers if it's covering the stump.
  • Starting cloth tomorrow. Little nervous because i've never used cd's before, but $25 for a box of NB disposables is crazy talk.

  • Great, thanks everyone. I will do some experimenting to see if I can get the dipes on there in a way that won't cause rubbing!

  • My dd was only 5lbs at birth so we folded the front down on the tiny baby nappies inwards so they would still stick.
  • I'm new to CD. How many covers and inserts do you need at a time? Still waiting for my tiny girl to fit size small.
  • It depends. For the newborn phase you want 36 changes about to wash every other day. You can get away with less if you're ok with washing more. After that stage more like 24 changes is generally considered enough for eod washing.
