Breastfeeding

7 days pp and no signs of milk

I'm really determined to continue nursing but as the days drag on without my milk coming in I'm feeling more hopeless. I'm 7 days pp and absolutely no milk despite feeding every 2.5/3 hours and trying to get a pumping session inbetween each one. I feel as though I'm failing LO. I'm also dealing with serious nipple pain. I feel as though we have a good latch (according to nursing staff & LC) but one of my nipples looks pretty beat up. It's yellowish on the tip and really dry. Any advice? Words of encouragement? How do I heal my nipples?

Re: 7 days pp and no signs of milk

  • So sorry you are having a tough time! The beginning of breastfeeding is extremely frustrating!! Lansinoh makes a cream that you can rub on your nipples that offers some relief, it will get better in a few weeks once they get used to the friction.
What did the LC say about your milk not being in? I unfortunately don't have any advice or knowledge on how long it takes for milk to come in but I know it takes some people longer than others. Good luck to you!

  • W DD1 I started reglan on day 9 and my milk came on day 10. Maybe call your OB? Lots of skin to skin!!
  • Ask for an u/s to check for retained placenta ASAP! I had rp and my milk didn't come in until 4 weeks pp.

  • Is your baby having wet and poopy diapers?  If you have no milk at all I would think your LO would be constantly hungry at this point and wouldn't have the correct amount of poopy/wet diapers.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but I don't think just colostrum would be enough for a week old baby?

I'm with the pp...are you sure your milk isn't in?

  • Thanks for the responses! After speaking with the LC again she believes my milk is, in fact, "in." I just got panicky because I never got any of the signs I was looking (engorgement, leaking..). I can pump about .5oz from each breast in 10ish minutes and she said that sounds like milk volumes and LO has plenty of wet/poop diapers and his BMs appear to be the normal color/consistency of breastfed babies.
