Traveling cross country at 33 weeks

So DH and I are traveling from Austin to Denver in a few weeks. I will be 33 weeks during this trip.
I'm really happy because this is where all my family and friends are and we will be taking our maternity pics there as well, at the place we got married in the mountains. :)
My only concern is about LO coming early. My dr has told me I'm not in any risk for her being premature, but I feel like it's a big risk.
I want to pack the car seat and hospital bag just in case, but my mom and hubby think I'm being crazy.
My dr already told me to make sure I stay hydrated and get out and walk every two hours so I don't get blood clots in my legs and whatnot. I am due to take a growth U/S in a week and a half and he said as long as everything looks good, I'm okay to travel.
What would you do, pack a bag/car seat, or just trust she will stay in for another week?
(We are gonna be in a medium size vehicle with 2 giant dogs, which is why DH doesn't want the added room of a car seat)
Thanks in advance!

That's a tough one. I know someone who gave birth at 33 weeks while on vacation, and I doubt she thought that was going to happen. If you can make the room, I would take the carseat and anything you think you'd need in the hospital (that DH couldn't just run out and buy wherever). But I'm a "take the umbrella because it will rain if you don't" type of person.

I don't think a 33 week-er would be coming home right away, I guess if it were me I'd leave the infant seat at home in the box and if baby ends up being born on vacation I'd have someone go out and rebuy it for me then return the one I have at home.

I would consider bringing a hospital bag since it's small, I also would want the car seat safe at home just in case there were to be an accident I'd hate to have to replace it.

  • I wouldn't pack any of the baby stuff. The statistical odds are in your favor.

  • I flew during my last pregnancy at 32 weeks and it was fine. Just drink a ton of water and get up and walk around often. Sure there is always a chance you can go into labor, but 33 weeks is very early so if you don't have any pre-term labor signs then chances are that you will not go into labor. When I flew I didn't pack a hospital bag or bring any baby stuff. Like PP said, if you had a 33 week-er chances are you/the baby would spend at least a little extra time in the hospital, enough time to get the necessities you needed.

  • I will be flying from Iowa to Alaska at 32 weeks and coming back at 33 weeks. I will not be taking anything for baby with me. As PPs have said, baby would t be coming home in 2 days, so there would be time to have it mailed to you if needed.
  • Last pg I H and I drove from Louisiana to WI and back when I was around 25 weeks.  The drive wasn't so bad but it messed with my back and that was the start of my SI dysfunction.  I wouldn't be willing to do it now because I get too uncomfortable in the car (because the SI dysfunction is back this time).  If I were you I doubt I'd take the car seat.  A baby born that early would be in the nicu for awhile and would probably go home in a car seat bed anyway.  Worst case scenario if you did need one you could borrow from a friend or get a cheaper one to get you home.

  • Just throwing out my experience:

I was type 2 diabetic pre-pregnancy, which automatically made me high risk. However, my whole pregnancy was excellent, aside from some spotting early on. My Drs were always thrilled with the control I had over my sugars and how well LO looked on ultrasounds and always a great heart rate. I went into labor at 29+2. I was out of town, so I wasn't able to have my doctor with me. The oncall OB I saw at this hospital says it looks like I just have a weak cervix, and that wasn't something they could know until I experienced this first pregnancy.

So yes, the odds are in your favor, but I would be prepared for anything to happen while out of town!

  • I just did a 2000 mile drive from colorado to North Carolina at 28 weeks. I don't recommend taking the car seat for the reasons other people have stated but I would make sure you have a copy of your medical records. If you go into labor that early it will save you lots of time already having your records printed out. I had no issues being in the car other than stopping every 2 hours!!
  • Lurking from August here.... Denver area has a ton of hospitals (most with great NICUs). Just as an FYI the most advanced in term of really hard cases is St. Luke's/Presbyterian. It has a level 4 NICU and amazing high risk docs.

So just for your knowledge that's the one to ask for (in general) for the most complicated cases. There are a ton of hospitals around here that rock though. Enjoy your maternity pics and visit!

And I agree with the leave car seat at home b/c you can buy one and depending on size of LO not all fit the tiniest sizes so you might have to change up anyways.
Thanks for the info! That's really good to know.
Thanks yo everyone's responses, I probably won't take the car seat, but i might bring a small hospital bag just in case!
  • *to, not yo, haha

This is exactly what I would do. Also just in case you caould ask your doctor for a copy of you medical records to have that on hand just in case anything were to happen.

  • I flew cross country (Alaska to Florida) last pregnancy at 33 weeks and then back at 35.5 weeks with no problems.  As others have said, if you deliver that early you wont be taking baby home right away and your carseat may not fit baby.  If it makes you feel better throw a few items in your bag for L&D as a just in case, but not really necessary.

  • We're doing a 5 hr drive to small town WI at 34 weeks. Hadn't even crossed my mind that the baby may be that early - but after the passed few weeks seeing some of the births in this group already, it's definitely something to be mentally prepared for.

We probably won't bring any baby items (also, it's for a shower, so we'll at least be coming home with baby items)... But I'll probably do some brief research on area hospitals just in case.

Anyone from Greenbay/Appleton? That's the biggest city near where we'll be.
