June 2014 Moms

~*Born to Run Junebugs Check-in*~

This is a weekly thread for runners who are due June 2014, that is posted on Mondays. All who run--or who want to start running--are welcome, regardless of mileage, pace, ability, size, shape, or terrestrial status. This is a place to talk about running while pregnant, training, runs, races, gear, recovery, nutrition, and whatever else we can think of.

Anyone who posts here regularly should feel free to start the thread on Mondays if it seems to be missing.

How were your runs this week? Lay it on us...

GTKY:  How long after baby is born do you PLAN to wait to run? 2 days? 2 weeks? 6 weeks?  (Plans fail, I'm just saying barring complications... I've been surprised by several mommies!)

Re: ~*Born to Run Junebugs Check-in*~

  • My runs:
Actually really great. I ran 3 times, 3 miles each, 9 miles total.  They are getting extra extra slow.  Also my heart rate monitor cut me because I don't have space between my boobs and bump so I've been going without it, relying only on how I feel.  I also did yoga once, and Tai Chi once. And a little extra walking.

    GTKY:
I know I want to wait at least 6 weeks before doing much at all.  I might start walking a little before then, but I have heard and read so many horror stories about starting back too soon!  I really want to let my body heal completely before trying to get back on track.

    Random:
I had the best visit with my dr. this week.  She was so uplifting and encouraging as relating to my running/giving birth.  Seriously I am so lucky to have a dr. that supports an active pregnancy.    I also got my first crazy shocked look at the gym this week, it was hilarious (jumped off the treadmill and the girl on the spinning bike behind me almost fell off her bike!!)

  • Happy Monday!

Last week wasn't great.  I had things to do at work some days so I didn't make it to the gym during work and when that happens, I rarely ever get in a workout.  I did 3 days of elliptical/walking for 60 mins each.  I planned to walk the dog a lot over the weekend, but I was getting baby things together so that never happened.  I still have no desire to do strength training either....Ready to get back into the gym today though!

GTKY:  I plan on waiting to run until I'm cleared by the doc.  I will do light walks before then though (once I feel like I can).  I'm hoping to get cleared for a run by my birthday (that would be a great birthday present) but we will see.  My birthday is 6 weeks after my due date....

  • hey runners!

my runs and workouts were great last week!  i went for a couple runs that felt really good.  i also had a timed mile during my gym class and i thought i was going to clock in at a 10 min mile.  i totally surprised myself and finished at 8:02!!  for a mile!!  yes, i am bragging but i am also carrying 25 extra lbs and 8 months preggers, so i am so proud of myself :)

i hope to start running and working out as soon as i am cleared and feel able. i hope to begin walking with baby boy right away too.  as soon as i am cleared i will sign up for a race to help motivate.  i have friends encouraging me to sign up for a half marathon but we will see....

  • @lola4411 - damn - your fast!  how fast do you run non-pregnant?  Signing up for a race will be such motivation!  I will be doing the same, but not sure the distance yet.  I'm thinking I will work on getting back up to speed the rest of the year then really nail a half marathon in the Spring but we will just have to see how it goes!  I may not want to wait that long for the half!

  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us... Runs this week were great. I ran 4 days, for 15 miles total and had one day of yoga. My long run this week was 6 miles of HILLS! I felt great after, though. So thankful to still be able to tackle some difficult terrain this far along.

GTKY:  How long after baby is born do you PLAN to wait to run? 2 days? 2 weeks? 6 weeks?  (Plans fail, I'm just saying barring complications... I've been surprised by several mommies!) I will run as soon as I feel physically able. I hope that is before the 6-week mark, but luckily I have an OB who is also a distance runner who will be a huge support and will help me determine when I am truly ready to run. I plan to walk with the baby immediately after, assuming I don't have a c-section or anything else that would take a longer recovery time.

@lola4411 Nice job! The fastest mile I can run right now is just under 10 - I struggle to get to 8 even when I'm NOT 25 lbs heavier! You rock! I am also signing up for a half to help motivate me and also remind me that I am capable of bouncing back - mine will be in Nov. I'm also hoping to do a Super Spartan (10-mile obstacle race) with my husband in September. That one is not quite as important to me - it's more for the camaraderie with hubs than anything else - but we both hope I will be able to do it!

  • I was dealing with contractions last night so I am increasing water and not focusing on walking till I get past the 34 week mark. After that, I am all for power walks!

I have vaginal births so I hope that will help get me out there sooner. I'd like to say around 2-3wk PP I'll toy around with a short/slow jog in the neighborhood. It all depends on how my lady bits are feeling ;) if it waits till 6 weeks PP, i'm fine with that too!
  • thanks @babygabe614 and @Kinipela7 !  i was pretty surprised at how fast i ran.  i am also super competitive and i was runnig with a group for only 1 mile so i know that helped.  my PR for one mile is 6:41, so not too bad at 8 months lol.

btw, super grateful for our weekly thread.  it is my favorite and look forward to our checkins every monday.  very proud of all of us :)

Well, still walking! MUCH better endurance and I was able to walk several miles per day. We went to Portsmouth NH and Maine for a babymoon. With rests, I wasn't a stick in the mud!

I'm so big that I've thought about going for a mini-run just to see the looks on people's faces- hehe

I plan to start walking, even just for five minutes, as soon as I feel able.  As far as running, I suppose once I feel ready I'll do some light jogging. I hope to be walking after 2 weeks.

Keep up the good work ladies!

  • I'm amazed at all you ladies that are still getting out there!

And @lola4411, holy moly! I'm nowhere near an 8 min mile even when not pregnant! Keep it up!!!

I haven't done much of anything this pregnancy and regret giving in to 1st tri fatigue. I've registered for a untimed 5k fun run at the end of September. I'm planning on getting back out there once I get the 6 week green light and hopefully that will give me a enough time to build back some endurance before the run.
