High fever for 5 days?

We had DS (4) at the pedi Wednesday bc DD (16 mo.) had a high fever the day before and he had a low one (102). Turns our she had an ear infection and pedi said DS looked like he might be on the verge of a nasty stomach bug. Wednesay night and Thursday night he had fevers that spiked over 104 but came down (slowly) with medicine, compresses etc.

Took him back to pedi on Friday and she said if not stomach bug could be roseola and to watch for a rash. He had no other symptoms.

Friday night he threw up and had diarrhea all day yesterday (Saturday). He's drinking plenty but eating next to nothing.

We have a follow up with pedi tomorrow but in the meantime I'm just looking for some reassurance that a toddler can spike a 104 plus fever for several days as part of an illness. We have never dealt with this before. And his fever goes down low or goes away practically every day.

Thanks in advance for any personal experiences you can share!

Re: High fever for 5 days?

  • My daughter currently has adenovirus. Fever as high as 104.2 and has been ongoing since Wednesday. Also has tummy issues associated with it. Sounds like a possibility for your kiddo, but definitely not unusual to have a high fever that lasts for days,

  • happened to us when my daughter had a bout of gastroenteritis. Her temp suddenly spiked. She then suddenly had chills, vomiting, and then diarrhea.

  • We had 105 fever with my 5 year old on and off for 4 days - was the flu most likely, that then turned into nasty cough- pneumonia- which antibiotics cured. She did throw up twice also.

My 2 year old then got it- threw up once, and had 105 fever too. It went down with rotating meds only- Tylenol and motrin every 3 hours. It was closer to 103 by day 3 and then gone by day 5.

My pedi thinks they both had the flu- even with flu shot.

It sucked big time, but nothing they could really do (until my older one got the bad cough). They were drinking enough and eating (when temp was down with meds) .

It took a full 7 days for them to be normal again.

I have NEVER seen fevers like this- the highest either of them have ever had is 103.

  • I would request bloodwork if this is still going on. We found out last night that DS has pneumonia after 3 days of spiking a high fever up to 105 and no other symptoms. His fever also would go away and then return. The ER doc was going to send us home but luckily I spoke up and now we are on meds.
