April 2014 Moms

First day on my own.

Today my husband went back to work, so it's my first official day doing it all on my own. We had a rough start, when my lovely little lady decided to stay up screaming her head off until 1am..  It wasn't hunger, gas or poop, she was overheated..  April heatwave and an apartment that doesn't have air conditioning. Terrible mix!

The day has been good so far, I am exhausted but I'm coping. How was your first day? What helpful tips can you give me.

  • Today is my first day on my own too. No tips here but my husband is going to leave within the next hour and I'm pretty depressed already...it was so nice having the family bonding time.

  • Cliche, but sleep when she sleeps. Even if it's for 30 minutes. Go out for a walk and get some fresh air. Enjoy your alone time, housework can wait. :)

This. It stinks when it is beautiful out because you feel like youre missing out on the the nice weather but the nap will be worth it! !
  • I have a 2 yr old at home too, and today's my 2nd day home with both of them. I absolutely agree that housework can wait! Keeping my kids alive and fed on some days is enough of a task.
I also try to get out of the house every day, even if it's just a walk to get the mail or a trip to the store. The change of scenery is good for everyone, and I like to get my kiddos used to a bunch of different sights and sounds.
I've also found it helpful to get into a rough routine every day. For example, wake up, feed, tummy time, nap in the boppy, outing, feed, books, etc.

  • I'm in the same boat! Housework can't even wait, we have a showing at noon (we're selling our house) which has almost been an every day thing. The sense of accomplishment that I can actually handle it all helps me get through it. If anything it establishes a routine. It'd be nice if she didn't use me as a human pacifier all the time because it takes an hour of nursing just to get her down for a nap. Today we might go for a long walk. I'm hoping that gets her used to sleeping somewhere other than my arms.

You can do it!! I really enjoy my time alone with little one, its wonderful!
  • Pick ONE non-baby thing to do today. Nothing complicated- brushing teeth & taking a shower counts. Any since household chore counts. Getting a phone call in. Just something so that at the end of the day you don't feel like all you did was sit & handle the baby.

the bouncer is your friend when you want to shower- LO sits in there sleeping most of the days that I shower while home alone with her.

  • DH went back to work today too. Thankfully he was able to drop off the 3 oldest at school before leaving. Trying to get into a routine is the plan for this week. Good luck everyone!!!

  • First day alone here too! Kinda nervous, FTM and not sure what to expect. I am excited to be able to stay home but a little lost on how my days will go. How do you ensure quality time with your baby even when they are so little? What do you mommys do at home when your little one is sleeping? I want to feel like I did something with my days rather than just sit here and stare at my daughter
  • Don't forget to take care of yourself! i was up most of the night with LO and my morning started off with the essentials: Coffee, Tylanol, lots of water and a heaping bowl of cereal :-)

I ditto the non-baby activities. This will help you keep your Pre-baby self sane! I hung laundry outside yesterday while LO napped and although it was so ordinary, it felt wonderful to not be on the couch watching crappy daytime TV. You got this!!
  • Good luck! It's my first day home alone with both of mine. I was able to do a fun project with my toddler while the baby slept this morning, but the last time I nursed the baby my older child tried to pull him off the boob and smack him on the head. It's hard to figure out what to do with a newborn, since they don't really do much. Sitting on the couch with baby snuggled on my chest was a favourite activity of mine! Putting baby in a carrier like a wrap or sling and going for a walk is a good idea too...get some mama/baby snuggles in and a bit of exercise at the same time.

My first day home too, well first night (DH works 5pm - 2am). I'm pretty nervous!
  • Today is my first day too.  Even though DS is almost 7 weeks old, I've had DH or family here since we came home from the hospital.  We're off to a good start! I'm doing some work from home while he sleeps in the Moby.  Good luck ladies - we've got this!

  • How is everyone's day going so far? I can't believe it's almost 3pm already!! I have managed to shower, do 2 loads of laundry, the dishes and I'm going to sweep and mop the front room before my oldest gets home from school. Emma has had 2 "awake" periods and is currently down for her 2nd nap.

    So far, so good!!!

  • I'm definitely feeding off the positive energy from this post! I also opted for an easy slow cooker dinner and I have completed 2 loads of laundry but haven't folded anything yet. Baby steps!
  • I have showered but otherwise watched tv literally all day...feel a bit guilty since I have two baskets of laundry that need to be put away and another basket that needs to be washed....but after DS wakes up and eats and settles back down, I think in going to try and sneak a small nap before DH gets home and maybe I'll be more productive this evening, haha .

  • First day here, too! Had the fussiest night ever so we didn't start our day until almost 10:30. I took a shower and washed my hair. That is enough for me to be happy! Hopefully I will leave the house tomorrow for a bit.

  • I made it through my first day!! I took the clean dishes out of the dishwasher, filled up an empty soap dispenser and we are all still alive and fed! ;) I am very happy about that but totally worn out! I know by the middle of the week i will be exhausted and probably a total wreck! I am just taking it one day at a time.

  • First day for me too. This morning I took care of my plants and swept the porch and it was VERY therapeutic. I didn't realize how much I enjoyed it until I was done. My bf was still here when I did that but it was nice to take care of something other than baby for few minutes. I savor my showers and time on the toilet. I'm gonna take him for a walk in a few minutes. Then I'll binge watch the Cosby show on hulu while he naps. I may have a little coffee on the porch just because.

First day for me, too! I was terrified, but it's been okay. After a rough night of frequent wakings, LO slept until almost 8, which allowed me to spend some time w/ DD, pack her lunch, make breakfast, and even drink a cup of coffee myself. Only glitch occurred when I dropped off my DD at school, then couldn't figure out how to get LO's car seat out of the stroller! After about 10 min of panic, some poor woman took pity on me and helped me figure it out. Damn Britax.

No advice, just stay confident and pray!
  • My first day alone will be Thursday and I'm very anxious/dreading it... This post made me feel a little better but still everytime I think about it I get a super knot in my stomache :((

  • I survived.. But my house is a disaster, which is weird considering I felt like I didn't do anything all day, except feed, change diapers, rock the baby and walk the dog and baby. But apparently I managed to destroy this place.

Today is another test, my wonderful husband has flown to Germany for the day, (we live in Sweden) he won't be home until 10:30 tonight. So now I'm not going to have any breaks which is a bit scary!

  • Any one else take a photo to prove they survived the day alone? Here we are terrible swaddle and all but happy, loved, dry, and fed. What more can a baby want?
