Newborn with a cold

My 2.5 week old is sick with a cold! Yesterday in the morning he didn't want to fall asleep and then in the afternoon he slept all afternoon. When he woke up his nose was all stuffy. Now this morning he is coughing, sneezing, snot and still tired. I will be calling the doctor once they open to keep them informed and see if i can do anything other than keep him elevated and use the humidifier. Have you guys ever dealt with a newborn having a cold? This is my first week alone with a 2.5 week old and a 20 month old so i am kind of nervous.

  • Did you use a humidifier as he slept? Maybe that would help?

Mine does, too.  She got a stuffy nose at 4 days old, it lasted a week and now is back again.  I've just kept her elevated, used a humidifier, and saline drops with the aspirator.

  • My LO isn't sick...yet. Dd has had a fever and a cough for 6 days now, even on antibiotics. All their pedi said was to watch very carefully for a fever as it's considered a medical emergency for a newborn. If they get super stuffed up you can always take them in a steamy bathroom (keep the shower running) to help open them up a bit.

  • Saline drops with an aspiratior, humidifier and keep elevated. We are dealing with the tail end of a cold with DD too, and watch for fever.
    First we had you.

    Now we are complete.

  • If they don't have a fever, are eating well and aren't having trouble breathing than you can watch at home and try all the things mentioned to keep them comfortable. Sometimes babies are really stuffy for the first few weeks after birth and it's just their nose "adjusting" to being on the outside and not actually a cold. A tiny amount of snot can make them sound like a tractor!
