pacifier

If your LO takes a pacifier, does he/she keep it in by themselves? DS likes it and it soothes him... as long as I am holding it. Otherwise he spits it out. DS1 never took a paci so I'm not sure what's normal.

Eta: He is six weeks and the paci is a Natursutten. He wanted nothing to do with the Dr Brown's.

  • She only likes it in the car and will keep it in by herself.

  • Good question we are dealing with the same thing. DS gets soothed by it but like you said will not keep it in his mouth by himself. I wonder if he will learn after a few weeks. (2.5 weeks and it is a soothie)

  • He will keep in Nuks, but not soothies.

  • It took DD a while to get the hang of it. DS seems to like it but then sometimes gags on it. I hope he takes it (for our daycare provider's sake), but it will be fine if he doesn't!

  • DS will take the mam ones but not the nuk kind. He spits those out!

Same here, Nuk and Soothers were a no go, but she loves the Mam.

  • Yep my lo also likes the mam and keeps it in.

  • Eden only takes Avent pacis. She hates any other brand and spits them out immediately.

  • My little girl took a soothie at the hospital the day she was born, and the next day we started using Mams. She can keep it in for several minutes (haven't timed it or anything), but it usually falls out shortly after she falls asleep.

  • My baby girl will keep it in until she is in a deep sleep. Then it just falls out.
  • Nuks here. Soothies don't stay put. We tries soothies first when he was first born and he gripped it like a steering wheel with both tiny hands. It was hilarious. Of the nuks we have 0-2mo & 0-6mo. He seems to have an easier time keeping the smaller 0-2mo ones in.

  • Thanks ladies, maybe I'll experiment with some other brands. DS1 just loved to nurse for comfort and this LO wants nothing to do with the boob once he's gotten enough milk yet he still needs the comfort of the paci.

  • Ds has a wubbanub too and the little stuffed animal helps him keep it in his mouth.

  • We aren't using a paci yet, but with DS1 he wouldn't ever keep the soothies in (we started at 1 month), but he really liked the other Avent ones.
  • How many of you are BFing or EBFing? I'm worried LO will get confused. Have any of you experienced that yet?
  • I'm EBF and haven't introduced a pacifier yet. Honestly I haven't seen the need, but might give one down the road. With my son (also EBF) I gave him one around 3 weeks, and after 4 months he wanted nothing to do with it.

I have BF all three of my kids and never experienced nipple confusion

This is good to know! The comfort sucking/nursing to fall asleep is tearing my nips up so I caved and gave LO a soothie.

This exactly, my little boy tries to comfort nurse himself to sleep and will not settle if I put him down. I felt like such a bad mom when I caved and let my SO give him a pacifier the last two nights so I could sleep.

  • DD2 takes a mam and has since day 1. No nipple confusion or anything. Also hold her against my chest to hold the nuk in and I think it tricks her to think she is nursing. I'm so glad that works because DD1 comfort nursed 24/7.

    EBF, no confusion for him.

Also, I tried a MAM today and he's keeping it in much better.

We were using gum drop which is like a soothie and it would fall out but the mam is much better. They come in newborn size that is a better fit than the regular ones.

  • EBF, no nipple confusion. We introduced the paci on day 2 or 3. He will only take it if he needs to soothe....if he's crying for any other reason he spits it out.

  • EBF and no nipple confusion. I never thought I would use one (after seeing too many toddlers that won't give them up) but our pedi recommends them from now until 3-4 months to get their non nutritive sucking.

  • Wubanubs! We used them with ds1and now lo. The physical therapist in the nicu says she recommends them. It still falls out but lo is getting better at getting but back by hiself. I try not to to give it while he is falling asleep because it seems to wake him when it falls out so he can find it again. I like that Wubanubs are easy to find but the back and forth of it falling out and giving it back is counter productive to soothing him to sleep until his fine motor skills improve enough to find and put it in himself. He uses it most when he is chillin'in his swing.
  • I'm EBF and wanted to hold out for a few more weeks to make sure there is no nipple confusion since we can't latch without a shield right now, but DH has given one to her a few times. I'm going to talk with the lactation consultant to see if it's worth trying because the comfort nursing is killing me too!
  • Wubbanubs works every time!

    Same thing with my son.
  • I gave my 3 week old one, a soothie & also a mam one. He has no issues with nipple confusion.
  • LO is 2 weeks old and was spitting the paci out too, so I started placing her hand behind it. Since she thinks she has her hand in her mouth, she unknowingly is holding the paci in her own mouth.
  • How do you know the difference between when LO is hungry and when they need to be soothed?

Usually if the paci pisses her off even more she's hungry.

I can tell by the way LO sucks at the breast. No swallows, quicker, smaller sucks.
