(Third) First ultrasound jitters (JCM285) UPDATE :-)

Does anybody here feel like she has been in the movie, "Groudhog Day"? I feel as though I have gone through too many first ultrasounds without successful results later on. You would think I would be less nervous this time, but it just isn't the case. My (third) first ultrasound is tomorrow and it will be the first time DH goes with me. We are both really nervous, because I have had more bad news than good when going to these appointments. On one hand, I am happy to go and "get it over with", because it should clear up some confusion we have regarding how many weeks along I am and of course, whether or not we have a heartbeat. On the other hand, I know that I am going to have a tough time looking at that monitor. Hoping for some long-awaited good news tomorrow!

I totally sympathize. Last Thursday I had another first ultrasound and I was a mess for two days, and at one point I tried to convince dh that we should cancel the appointment. When I got to the room, I cried and closed my eyes until the re told me the baby was ok. El Shrinko (my therapist) says that the best thing to do to combat the anxiety is to try to replace the negative thoughts with more positive ones. It sounds rediculous and frankly I wanted to smack her when she suggested it but, for me, it helped a little bit. I sat in the waiting room saying over and over to myself "it will be ok."

I hope you are able to make it through he next few days with limited anxiety about the appointment. You and your LO will be in my t&p for an awesome appointment.

Yes, I can completely relate. My fear isn't of first ultrasounds, it is of ultrasounds in the 10-12 week timeframe. I've had lots of good ultrasounds at the 5-8 week range, but 3/5 of those "healthy" babies have lost their heartbeats between 8 and 11 weeks. So yea... I feel ya. Groundhog Day in the worst possible way. FX for you tomorrow!

You are not alone in these feelings- my (third) first will be next Monday, and I'm trying to wait patiently. I have to go to work that morning until my afternoon appointment- I'm going to be a hot mess. So glad your DH is going with, I'm bringing mine as well! Here's to hoping we both get to be AW's and share pics of our LO's afterwards!!

Thinking of you. I also have a fear of ultrasounds. They cause so much anxiety because I have also had so many bad ultrasounds. I have a 13 week ultrasound coming up and I'm terrified that they will find something wrong with my baby again. I even have a parking space that I like to park at in front of my doctors office that I tell myself is my "lucky" parking spot. I know it sounds ridiculous.

What helps ease it a bit for me is to tell the tech upfront that I am very nervous and I usually explain my loss history. I then tell her to tell me right away if she sees a heartbeat and if things look good. Some techs don't talk much but in my experience when I open up a little, they do too. I am thinking positive thoughts for you. Remember that this pregnancy is different and just because things ended so sadly the last times doesn't mean that this time will be the same.

Thanks ladies!!! I really appreciate all of your well wishes. I am freaking out a little bit more now because I had a terrible dizzy/nausea/cold sweats spell about an hour ago, but glad I have the appointment tomorrow so I can ser whether everything is ok.

UPDATE: we just got out of the appointment and...we have a baby!!! It turns out I will be 8w along tomorrow. The baby has a heartbeat of 162 and it looks HUGE on the U/S monitor (probably because that is the farthest along I've ever seen). We are going back April 12 but right now we are ecstatic to have seen so much today! Only downside is I have a terrible rash on my bum that just began today, but doc took a sample to send away to make sure its nothing too serious and also gave me a prescription to help relieve the pain. Anyway, I am SO happy right now T&Ps for healthy ultrasounds all around!!
