Bassinets?

So i am looking at all the baby gear they sell an i am seeing a lot of focus on bassinets and i am not sure if it is needed or not. A friend of mine gave me a fisher price rock n play sleeper and said she had her kids in it while they were newborn. So would that work instead of buying a bassinet? keep in mind I definitely am going to get a pack and play for baby.

I think you should be fine. I know a lot of people had babies who loved the Rock n Play and slept in it for months, and DD just slept in the Pack and Play for the first few months. Between the two of them, I doubt you'd need a separate bassinet, too.

I definitely would not get a bassinet in addition to a rock and play AND a pack and play. Our son slept in his crib in his room from the time he was a week old or so just because he was SO FREAKING LOUD in his sleep that I couldn't get any sleep at all with in our room. (As in, sounding exactly like he was awake but then I'd get up and look in there and he'd be completely out). BUT before that we were using a pack and play in our room and it was completely fine. A friend of mine adored her rock and play too, and her son slept in it for ages. A bassinet will just end up being another piece of equipment you have to store, and it is way less functional than the pack and play since it has no other purpose when they get bigger.

This is our first baby we are trying to not blow all our money on things we dont need thats the main reason i ask.

I am a FTM, so I recognize that I don't really know what I'm talking about:) That being said, I've researched baby products and talked with my friends that have babies. We decided to purchase the following bassinet.

For us, this was very affordable and I liked that I could easily move it around the house. We have a two-story house and I know I'm not going to want to move the pack-n-play upstairs. We also have several trips planned in his first 3 months and I figured this is something that I could take with us and it wouldn't be a total pain to transport.

Hopefully in December my answer is not much different:)

We used a Rock n Play with our first and we're planning on using it again with this one. I don't think a bassinet is necessary if you have a Rock n Play and a Pack n Play.

We never had a bassinet or a rock n play. We had a pack and play, which we used when we traveled until she was 2! We did co sleeping for a few weeks and then got her into her crib. She's been there ever since!

My mom bought us a used bassinette with my first pregnancy before we found out it was twins. We never used it. We slept them in their rocking/vibrating chairs till about 2.5 months old then they were in their crib. This time, I plan to use the bassinette since it's just one. I wouldn't buy one if you have a rock n play though. You don't need both.

For dd 1 and 2 we borrowed a bassinet. I did not use our pnp at our house, only when we were at my parents and we did not have a rnp.

Now a friend gave us a rnp and we will just make that work until baby is in the crib.

I think having a pnp, rnp and bassinet is overkill. You should be fine w what you have.

My son would only sleep in the rock n play. So I have a bassinet and pack n play from him that were pretty useless. For a month I slept 45 minutes at a time because he absolutely hated his bassinet. It could end up being your baby's choice. You just never know. I've kept everything and I'm still trying out the bassinet this time around. But truly I tell every FTM I know about the rock n play and how it saved my life. Or at least my sleep and sanity.

We will be using a graco cuddle Cove that had a rocking and vibrating bassinet and Moses basket.

Skip the bassinet. It was a big waste of space for us since LO had reflux and would only sleep long periods of time in the RNP.

A few of my friends, their newborns slept in the rock n' plays for a few months just like they would a bassinet. We have a bassinet that was given to us by a friend of mine but we're unsure if we are going to use it or not.

I used the RnP with my son. It was not my intention however he was born the day before Hurricane Sandy and we were displaced until son was just about a month old. So that is what we used. Our original plan was to put him right in his crib. Obviously, the burricane changed that plan. He stayed in the RnP until he was almost 3 months old. Then we moved him to his crib. He made it half way through the night in the crib and then we brought him with us and out him in the RnP. We are toying with the idea of a co sleeper with this one.

If you baby has reflux, which is very common, it will be recommended to find a way to tilt the crib or sleeping space at an angle to help them sleep. It's one of the first things our doctor recommended. My son slept at night in his rock n play from 1 to 5 months old. I understand your concern though. That's why I'm trying the bassinet again for this one. I'd prefer he sleep in it.

A friend of a family friend gave us some things, including a bassinet. I had originally planned on getting the RnP but I figured I might give it a shot and see if LO end up sleeping well in it. Otherwise I'll try other things later down the road.

@ekh2081‌ From what I understand, none of these items are regulated for safety for sleeping infants. This is why DH insists we will just use the crib in our room. It saves on things to buy, so I'm fine with that. Of course, most people aren't concerned about the flat, firm surface until baby can roll over because their face isn't going to be pressed against anything, so there shouldn't be much risk until a few months old.

I used the bassinet with DS, but only because it was a gift. We had no intention of purchasing or registering for one. We used it for 1 or two weeks until DS moved inot his crib. With this one, we will likely use it much longer, only because s/he will be sharing a room with us for months instead of weeks.
