Short bursts of crying/fussiness

LO is 2wks3days and EBF

She has has a pretty fussy 24 hours- she'll be sleeping and then wake herself up, cry out a few times, and then settle back down and fall asleep. She won't stay sleeping in bassinet or swing,
only if I hold her This has been happening nonstop for hours. Occasionally the crying will last longer but I can usually settle her down by picking her up/rocking her. She wasn't always like this and so I can tell if it's gas, she's hungry/wants to cluster feed , or something else. She's been nursing normally every 2-3 hours. I haven't called doc yet - no temp or other signs of anything wrong. I did mention to her last time LO had a fussy day or two and she waved it off as normal fussiness- it wasn't as bad as this though.

Any thoughts? Should I try gas drops or try feeding her more often? I'm an FTM so this may be perfectly normal fussiness/signs of a growth spurt for all I know. Just thought id ask as the last 24 hours have been extremely trying on DH and I. I haven't been able to do much beyond go to the bathroom alone, and haven't slept a wink. I'm also worried about holding her too much so that I perpetuate the not sleeping in her bassinet. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: Short bursts of crying/fussiness

  • Ours does this too, especially the last few days.   I think some of the "short bursts" where they quiet after a few cries are just a "holy shit I'm awake!" type of reaction.   The rest of the fussiness....who knows?   With C it's either he's hungry, needs a clean diaper, has gas, wants to be held/soothed, or is too hot/too cold.   We just try each thing in turn until we figure out what it is.  A few times we've gotten into a vicious cycle of feedings and diaper changes that we can't seem to break out of.

I wouldn't worry about "holding her too much" at this stage.  I mean, obviously you have to get some sleep for yourself at some point...but if you're coping with trading off who is holding her, and it works, then just go with it.  It's all about survival.   Having said that, don't be afraid to try something and see if it works (like the bassinet)...even if it didn't work a few hours ago, it might work now.  Worth trying.

  • I second the boob in the mouth! DS was inconsolable last night and we finally got him quiet this way. He sucked for awhile then dozed off against the boob while we watched three episodes of HIMYM and then DH was able to put him in the bassinet still sleeping.

  • Thanks ladies - I will try feeding more often as that may be the thing.. Here's hoping tonight is a little better :-/

  • I'm with the offer the boob camp too. If she doesn't want to eat she either won't or will spit up if she eats too much. My LO eats all evening from lime 5-10. It seems like if she's not on a boob she feels the need to cry.
