Thoughts on side sleeping

Our little lady loves side sleeping. She's currently asleep on her side after falling asleep with DH this way. He put her in the bassinet this way because it's the only way she doesn't wake up in the transition from cuddle to bedtime. Feels unnatural to wake her to me but curious what experiences have been had by the ladies out there?

Re: Thoughts on side sleeping

  • If it is just a nap and I am awake and keeping an eye on him I let him side sleep. Otherwise I do roll him to his back once I'm ready for bed too.

  • I've been putting my lo on her side at night with rolled up blankets on either side of her that are down near her waist so they are nowhere near her face. The blankets keep her on her side so she can't roll on her tummy. I know it's not what we're supposed to do but she would sleep on her tummy if I let her and hates being on her back so this is working for us right now.

  • My pediatrician said if baby rolls on their side by themselves side sleeping is ok, which mine does.

    This exactly.

  • I always rolled up a receiving blanket and placed it long ways behind DS's back to keep him tilted a little on his side. He was still mostly on his back but tilted just enough to not wake up screaming. This was 3 1/2 years ago though. DD1 and DD2 slept/sleep in the RNP.

I agree with this. I really wouldn't artificially put your baby on her side though. It's simply not safe. This is coming from someone who lost an otherwise healthy niece to SIDS at 5 wks. I know that this is probably just the beginning of posts about babies that simply won't sleep on their backs or on a firm flat surface. If you going to lay your baby on her side or front I would highly recommend an angel Monitor. It won't prevent SIDS but it's some protection.

  • We do the same as Laroo, with a blanket rolled up behind DS's back.  Side sleeping is his favorite.  The only time he'll sleep on his back is when he's so blissed out from eating that he gives me his 'touchdown' stretch, and leaves his arms like that while he sleeps :)
  • My LO loves to sleep on his right side (so do I) and I'm fine with it.

This makes me feel 10 times better. My son ALWAYS rolls to his side and it makes me nervous. Now that I know it's safe I can sleep better
