Interesting article on hiding pregnancy from big-data

I thought it was an interesting experiment, trying to hide your pregnancy from big-data collectors.  It reminded me of THIS article about how Target told a man that his teenage daughter was pregnant by sending her coupons in the mail. 

What's the scariest/weirdest "holy shit how do they know I'm pregnant?" thing you've ever gotten?  I think for me it was just watching the side bar of ads on my facebook page suddenly become bogged down with baby stuff because I was looking at things on Target and Amazon.  Or searching online while logged into my google account and then having it pop up on my smart phone.

    Interesting, my Facebook sidebar has been babies r us (where I'm registered, so I was on that website a bunch) and birth control ads. I think they're a little late for that one.

    When we were going through ivf I started getting enfamil formula coupons.
    And the minute my insurance was billed for "ultrasound on a pregnant uterus" I hit a call from the humana healthy start program.

    I get all types of ads in my FB regarding pregnancy.  I never click on them because I don't internet shop, typically.

    One time there was an ad in my sidebar for a married but dating website and they were using a picture of a friend of mine. That was a couple of years ago when FB was doing that kind of shady stuff-giving out your photos for ad usage. Maybe they still do it but now they at least don't use it on your friends. I emailed him and was like, 'UH, are you having a poorly-hidden extramarital affair?'

    A few years ago (DH and I were trying at the time but no success) both our parents were getting coupons from pampers and enfamil in our names at their addresses... My FIL even started getting highlights magazine randomly... No idea how or why on any of it.
