Ameda Purely Yours Breastpump

Anyone here have the Ameda pump? What are your thoughts on it? I have one and it sucks (or should I say…doesn't suck because crappy). The suction seems to be absolutely terrible on my pump and I don't know if all pumps are this way but I will start with good suction and after three seconds it goes crappy. I've tried replacing my white valves which worked for a few minutes. The only thing that seems to work is taking the top white cap off constantly to reset the suction which just isn't right. Anyone else havin these issues?! BTW I have the new version which has dark green lettering. Apparently there is an older better version with blue lettering.

I got mine through insurance and it is the same way.  I heard somewhere there is supposedly a bad batch of pumps and try calling Ameda.  I keep meaning to, but haven't.

eta:  Mine started having suction issues almost immediately. Also, the motor will sound like it's dying.

  • I got mine through insurance too. I got it last year so I called to get another one hoping maybe this one will be better. They said you can get one a year for free asking as you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • I have the same one with no problems. Are you making sure the flanges (I think that's what they're called) have good suction on both boobs? I notice if I move and it loses suction on one boob it doesn't work on the other boob.

Yup both boobs are sealed. Maybe I'm bein too rough with my valves? How are you taking them off when you clean it?
  • I use to love it, now I hate mine. Ameda still had wonderful customer service and have sent me another pump to replace the first one and nipple shields to get a better fit. I bet if I tried I could get another pump sent out. It's such a hit or miss with how well it will work and how much milk I'll get. The longer I've had it, the worst it seems to get. Not a fan. I basically stopped pumping. If I was going to pump for longer than 3 or so months I would invest in a medela.

Curious... How many have Cigna? Since I got it free I'm not that pressed about it. Had I come out of pocket I may be even more upset

  • I have the same issue with mine. I keep popping the cap off and putting it back every couple of pumps, which gets old really quick. I think its a bad seal with the cap and the rubber cup thing underneath. I've been meaning to call Ameda about it. I don't pump super often, and I only have the issue with one of the bottles so I haven't made it a priority.

  • Yep, same problem here, too. It starts out fine but after a few pumps the rubber thing stops unsuctioning completely. I do the same as you and pull off the white part to reset it, but that only works for a few pumps. I was just dealing with it because I got it through insurance and don't pump that often. Now I'm wondering if I should call Ameda about it!

That's exactly what happens to me with the diaphragm thing. I'm wonder if I should cave and buy a Medela cause I need to be able to rely on a pump when I go back to work! I feel like this Ameda won't be able to make up the difference of baby not being at the breast!
  • I pop those white caps on and off about every minute! I got a handsfree bra and it makes it a lot easier. I only pump once a day- if that- so I deal with it!
  • Are your white rubber pieces cracked or broken? That will affect suction. I used mine for at least 6 mos (not daily though) with no loss of suction. SIL used it after me and within 2 weeks she had to call Ameda for loss of suction. They helped her troubleshoot and even sent her new parts in case there was an invisible crack she couldn't see. That must have fixed it b/c she used it for another 4 mos till she switched to FF. This time I have a Medela and I like it but I actually think the Ameda had better suction. Call Ameda... They have great support!

  • My Ameda has been good so far, but I only pump once or twice per day, max.  I've been using it for about 3 weeks.
  • I have ameda, bought it in 2011 but it has the green lettering too? Anyhow, only time I had an issue like that it was user error because I didn't have the diaphram set in completely so the cap wasn't closing properly. But I used it for a year working ft without any issue.

I'd call Ameda and see if they can help you figure it out because something isn't right. Hopefully it's a simple fix.

  • I got mine through my insurance too and I hate it. It does not have good suction at all and the motor has died twice on me while pumping. Mine also came with a manual pump and it works much better. The electric would take me an hour to pump 4 ounces and it only takes 10 minutes with the manual.

  • I have the same one and haven't had any problems with it. I only pump occasionally though so maybe that's why? I'm glad this has come up though because as soon as I get back to work I'll be pumping much more often
  • Wondering if these are all from a bad batch or something. My first pump was ameda (borrowed from friend, purchased in 2011). Loved it - great suction and I had an amazingly easy time pumping. Friend needed it back, so I got a Hygeia - also loved it, but it was louder than ameda, plus I liked the bottle holder feature for when pumping in the car.

This pregnancy, I got an ameda through insurance to have for work and hygeia for home. The suction is awful - nothing like first pump. I brought the hygeia back out and Ameda will be the back-up. I mighty call, too, because they're usually such high quality.

  • @bribbon I've found if I have the speed turned way down it does a lot better, but that is sort of frustrating. I still haven't called Ameda, because I haven't been pumping much, but I want to start doing a little more so I am just going to call this week. It gets the job done, but popping that top off to fix the suction is very annoying.

  • Mine still sucks in a bad way. Ameda told me they would send me a new power adapter because it may be that. Right now I'm using a avent manual pump and it works sooo well compared to the Ameda. I'm on the hunt for a reasonable medela PISA. Right now in talks with a girl who is selling hers NWOB for 100. I'm so done with Ameda.
