PSA: Secondhand pumps online

Just a word of caution for those looking at breast pumps online, secondhand:  there are certain electronic models that are single user only.  I got all excited because I saw one for a good price, but upon further research on the model, it's a single user model.  Please check!  The issue with these pumps is that milk gets into areas of the machines that cannot be properly cleaned/disinfected between users and it becomes a sharing bodily fluids issue.  Please double check!!

Re: PSA: Secondhand pumps online

  • I made sure on the first go-round that I bought one where milk only went through the proper tubing. Cleaning one of those even for a single user sounds like a giant PITA. Not sure what type of pump I will get this time around but this is a good PSA. :)

  • Thanks!  There was a woman selling a single user on my local yard sale site and she didn't mention whether or not it had ever been used.  I was trying to be nice and sent her a message mentioning she might want to say something about "never been used", or take it down if it had been used...and she got all snarky on me!  I figured it's one of those things that people not used to pumps don't tend to think about, and obviously some people selling them don't think it's important to note the difference, so I thought I'd mention it.

  • I bet if she gave you attitude it is because she knows it is is single user and doesn't feel ethically inclined to look after others and let them know. Heck, then she probably just knows period it shouldn't be sold. Shame on her!

  • Also call your insurance because some states have them partially or fully covered for rentals and/or purchases!
