Anyone here test ANA + ?

Just got my second test results back and my ds-dna was also positive.. These are tests used to diagnose lupus and I just found out lupus runs in my family. I see a specialist tomorrow. Just looking for anyone with knowledge on this :( nervous..

Re: Anyone here test ANA + ?

  • Oh ok did they do the DNA test on you? What were your results?

  • About 5% of the population will test positive for ANA at some point and only half of them have/will get an autoimmune disease. The amount (called a titer) you test positive for is important to know- it's given in ratios that double- 1:40 and 1:80 are considered low and more likely to not mean anything, 1:160 and 1:320 are moderate, 1:640 and above gets doctors' attention and would make them look more thoroughly for an autoimmune disease. The pattern the antibodies make when viewed under a microscope (called an assay) can be suggestive of certain diseases vs. others.
Also, the presence of ANA can fluctuate throughout your life-I've been 1:320 and I've tested negative within a few months. I do have an autoimmune disease though.

I know much less about ds-DNA, sorry. Best of luck to you.

I have lupus- although not the positive DNA but I will say with the DNA and positive ANA it does definitely point to lupus thy also should be checking your complement levels (c3 and c4 which are typically low when in an active disease state) and liver enzymes (AST and ALT) and of course physical evidence such as rashes, joint pain, high SED rate, etc. You have to have 4 of the criteria to be diagnosed with lupus so I would recommend visiting lupus.org and learning a bit more about it. In terms of pregnancy one thing they definitely should check is for the presence of the lupus anticoagulant (that actually causes clotting contrary to the name) as that is one of the larger risks and the other large risk mostly in uncontrolled disease states is stillbirth past 39 weeks so they may want to induce early and you will be getting twice weekly u/s and a NST test once a week starting at 32 weeks if you are confirmed to have it. Feel free to message me if you have any questions- this is my first pregnancy with lupus and I'm almost at the end and I've had to DX for 5.5 years. Definitively recommend doing some reading- I know learning more always makes me feel
More prepared and in control. I know it sounds scary but the disease has quite the range if presentations and can be very well managed!

  • I have the + Lupus Anticoagulant. I've been on daily Lovenox injections since 6 weeks, when I found out. I actually had a successful first pregnancy, and delivered a 6# 7oz boy at 38 weeks. But, then I had a string of miscarriages when we were trying for this one, and thats what led to the testing, and the diagnosis. My Dr. just mentioned today, actually, doing a growth ultrasound at 32 weeks, but didn't mention anything about NST or anything else. They also haven't mentioned any follow up for after pregnancy, or additional testing. Are you more likely to get lupus, if you have the + lupus anticoagulant? I'm otherwise healthy, and have no symptoms of anything. Just curious.

You can have the lupus anticoagulant without lupus and it is a common cause of repeat m/c. It is only one criteria of 4 that you have to have out of 10 diagnostics to be diagnosed who lupus and many women with it do
Not have lupus. The positive ds-DNA however is rarely a false positive and usually you will see enough presenting evidence to get a lupus DX if you have that positive.
