Return policies for shower gifts?

I got a ton of stuff at my shower, I'm pretty sure from babies r us and buy buy baby, that was not on my registry and without gift receipts. Does anyone have any experience returning to these stores? Ideally id love store credit, but again, not on my registry and no receipts. I've read their policies on the websites but they really aren't very clear. Any actual experience??

Re: Return policies for shower gifts?

  • I don't have experience at those particular places, but most stores will give you store credit as long as tags are still on. I would imagine baby stores have to be used to getting stuff back with no receipts.

  • I feel as if most stores have started to get very strict on their return policy, so it's not so easy to return things that come without a gift receipt or weren't purchased off your registry.  Your individual experience may differ depending on the store you go to, but here is what I've found:

    BRU:
Here is their policy: Gift Returns

    • Gift Returns made at any of our Toys"R"Us or Babies"R"Us store locations will receive a merchandise credit when accompanied by a gift receipt or online packing slip.

    Return an in-store purchase

    • We will gladly accept returns made within 90 days of the purchase date for most items when accompanied by your in-store receipt.
      • Items must be returned, in new, or like-new condition, and in its original packaging, and with all paperwork including manuals, assembly instructions and your in-store receipt, as well as all accessories to ensure full credit.
      • Toys"R"Us and Babies"R"Us reserve the right to refuse any returns if they do not meet our return requirements.
So it looks like, per the last bullet point, that if it comes without a gift receipt, you're SOL.  But they don't explicitly say that, so it could be one of those cases where it depends on the actual store you go into and how lenient they may be.

Buy Buy Baby might be a better option if you can find out if they have carried that item:

returns without receipt or returns over 90 days

Items in new condition* returned with original packaging without an original receipt or packing invoice, or purchased over 90 days ago, will receive a store merchandise credit for the current selling price of the item.

You didn't mention Target, but that could be another avenue for returns.

  • in my experience with BBB, BRU and especially target if you take it to return it, when they scan the barcode if it shows up in their system they will give you store credit for the current price of the item without having a receipt. this isn't fool proof but it's worth a shot! good luck!
  • Last time, I was able to add the item to my BRU registry, then mark it "purchased", and then return it with no problem at all. It was super easy, but I'm not sure if their policies have changed within the last 2 years...

  • If you dont have a gift receipt, even if it was purchased off your registry, Target will give you store credit but counts it towards the $70 total of merchandise returns without receipt that they allow per drivers license per year. I thought this was dumb.

  • I just returned a Carter's outfit to BRU yesterday. Wasn't on my registry. They looked up my registry, however, and gave me store credit. No issues. :-)

We had tried returning it to walmart initially (that's where I thought it was purchased) but the barcode didn't match apparently. They were nice about it too, just couldn't return it there.

BBB will take anything back as long as they carry it in store, no receipt needed.

  • You can return wo receipt but you will get the current value so if an item you received is now marked down that's what you will get...even if it was purchases at full price. Better than nothing! :)
  • I just returned some things to BRU yesterday that I hadn't registered for and didn't have receipts for and they were awesome about it and gave me store credit no problem. Good luck!
  • Awesome, thanks guys!!

  • I've taken several things back to BRU and received store credit. I was told that it didn't matter whether it was on my registry of not they woud still let me return it. However, I didn't receive full price (only 80%) back even though the current price at the time of the return was full price.

I had gift receipts at Target but they couldn't find all of the items on the gift receipt. I also thought it was strange that they couldn't get a full listing of the items on the receipt. They still let me return the other items not on the receipt but I had to show my driver's license. They didn't mention the $70 limit. I got store credit for 90% of the full price of the item.

I returned items to Walmart and they let you return up to $50 worth per day, 3 times in six months without a receipt and you have to show your driver's license. I got 100% of the full price item in store credit. They said if the return is under $10 then it doesn't count towards the 3 times in 6 months policy.

  • I took things back to Target, Kohls, BBB and BRU.

First I sorted where everything was from - which was really fun (sarcasm) :)

Target took everything back with no problems if it had 1) a gift receipt or 2) was on the registry. If it wasn't on either of these, then they do the stupid "gimme your license and you can return it up to $70". So I took all the Target stuff that wasn't on my registry and added it all online. Then went in the store and printed out my purchased log. They then took everything back no problem and gave one GC for everything.

Kohls gave me back merchandise credit for everything I had a GC for. The other Kohls items (which were really random Carter's items they ended up taking back) they also gave me merchandise credit for but at the lowest price in the last year or so. That one I did have to give my license and they gave me two GCs (one for receipts, one without - they couldn't combine they said).

BBB I did the same thing as Target and added the non-registry stuff to my registry real quick before going. When I got there I didn't have to print out my purchase list (like Target), you just go to the counter and they will be able to pull up your registry there. They'll give you merchandise credit all on one GC, with or without receipt.

BRU I had receipts for everything so no problems there.

Random note about Carter's clothes... you can return most of them to Kohl's if you're not sure where they came from, however if they have a black hanger, those are from Costco/Sam's, not Carter's stores.

  • I recently did a lot of returns/exchanges to BRU. Some of the stuff was from my registry, but I got a lot of clothes that I decided to return. I didn't have any receipts for the clothes and they took them back without any issues and gave me store credit. Hope that helps!!
  • I exchanged items at BBB that I did not have receipts for.  Two of them were BG 4.0 cloth diapers and we wanted the BG Freetimes.  I knew they were not purchased from a BBB (Amazon) but acted like they were.  We just told them that the person must have grabbed the wrong kind and didn't realize their mistake.  The other item was a fleece Halo Sleep Sak and we have tons of those already so we just wanted a cotton one.  They gladly gave us credit towards the exchanged items and we paid the small difference.  No problems.

  • Thanks for the idea to go on and add the stuff to your registry before returning! This is a GREAT idea!

I'm ressurecting this thread for this question.  I am returning an item and taking your advice and marking it off the registry, but for the registry deal at BRU that just ended where you get 10% back on a GC of what was bought off your registry, how do they give it back to you if you can just go on and just mark it all off yourself?  They can't possibly have a loop hole that huge...
