Wake them up or no?

Our little one started cluster feeding last night/yesterday afternoon ( I think) she's only 4 days but all of a sudden she wanted to feed almost every 1.5 hours in the afternoon. Now she's been asleep for a long stretch, 5+hours and I'm wondering if I should wake to feed her and or just pump as my milk is coming in. No doubt if get up to pump she will wake up instantly hungry! Where is my baby manual? Lol any advice appreciated!

  • I didn't let DS go longer than 3 hours between feedings during the day and 4 hours at night the first week. On day 8, we found he was back to birth weight so we now let him sleep.

  • DD only sleeps long stretches at night. During the day she likes to sat 2-3hrs, which is fine with me. I was told to wake her up, but I don't unless I feel like I need to nurse. I have to watch pumping, as I am producing too much milk :-/. I also feel she nurses better when I let her tell me when she's hungry. Good luck, you'll know what feels right.
  • Wake up. Mine are 19 days and I won't let them go more than 4 hours without food. Especially breast milk :) you'll figure it out without the manual

  • We had to wake to feed every 3 hrs until she was at birth weight. Now we don't wake her and she wakes on her own by 4 hrs. Even after cluster feeding.

  • We were told to wake every 3 hours (day and night) to feed until he was back to his birth weight. During the day he would eat much more often than that (every 1-2 hours). Even if he was napping we woke him at 2.5 hours so he'd be awake enough to eat by the 3 hour mark. Now he's past birth weight we were told we could let him go as much as 5 hours at night, but he doesn't make it that long (and neither do I). At four days old I would not go more than maybe 3 hours without feeding unless your pedi specifically says it's okay.

Upon discharge from the hospital, the nurse said to feed every 2-3 hours with one five hour stretch allowed. Our pedi told us the same thing at our first appointment.

DS was a 9 pounder, but at that point had lost almost 10% of his birth weight. He didn't sleep for 5 hours straight until he was back to his birth weight though. It all seemed to work out. As long as your LO isn't having issues gaining weight, I personally wouldn't worry about one long stretch a day.

  • We were told wake up every 2-3 hours until she surpasses her birth weight.
  • At 4 days old, yes I would wake at 3 hours to feed. Especially since many have some jaundice at that point, regular feeding and pooping is needed to flush it out.

  • Super helpful thread! My family and DH keep saying not to wake him. I keep telling them he needs to get back to his birth weight. It's not like he gets super angry when I wake him up and then he will fall right back to sleep.

Exactly...but if they go too long without eating, they'll wake up SUPER hungry and frantic for food, which makes it harder to latch.  Plus your breasts will be fuller (unless you pumped), which also makes it harder to latch.  It just results in them getting super-frustrated because they want food NOW and can't make it happen.

  • Ditto @Avion22‌ - waiting too long to feed can not only be bad for baby but make things really hard on the next feeding. Five hours is a long time to go at this age.

  • Once lo got back to birth wait (day he got of the the nicu) we started letting him feed on demand. He is doing great great. Sometimes feeds every 2 hours during they day and will sometimes sleep up to about 6 hours at night :) So, no,we don't wake him because he eats plenty each day/24 hour period when averaged...just more during the day and a little less at night. I consider myself very lucky!
