  My LC said 10-15 seconds.  If the pain lasts longer than that, it's a bad latch.  

  
  

  ETA:  Sorry, reading fail.  I have no idea how long it lasts.  At almost 4 weeks, I'm still in pain when he latches.  But only for 10 seconds :-)

  Mine really started feeling better around 7-10 days pp.

  BFP: 7/5/10   EDD: 3/13/11  Miscarriage 8/1/10 at 8 weeks

  It helps me to "feed" more nipple as he starts to suck. The first quick pulls are kind of painful but I make a boob sandwich with my other hand and adjust the angle as he starts to take longer pulls so that he can get more in his mouth. Seems to help...

  Mine has started to feel a lot better and DS is 9 days old. As long as he is latching properly, things should start feeling better at least by 2 weeks. Maybe not 100% pain free, but at least like 80%! This is according to the lactation consultant at my pedi's office.

  With DS1, my pain went down at around 2 weeks and eventually went away entirely.

  I only have pain on my right side, and only for the initial 5-10 seconds...

  Try a nipple shield for a day or two! Maybe it was just good timing (about 2 weeks) but I had enough one day, tried the shield for a day or two (frustrating but felt better) and went back to just her and I and it was SO much better!

  Is it your nipple or your boob that hurts? My nipples were pretty raw with DS1 until 3ish weeks, but I found that hydrogel pads worked miracles. My whole boob hurts now when DS2 latches because I'm pretty engorged. I find that if I hand express a little bit of milk before he latches on, it's way less painful.

  Mine seemed to get better after 2w but then I had mastitis and the pain from that was way worse and lasted a few days. LO is 4w now and pain has subsided
