I called L&D but still not sure what to do

And my doctor's after hours line stopped already. I've been having mild contractions for about an hour, the whole 5-1-1 thing. I've got spotting as well. I called L&D and they basically said to wait a while longer if I want or just come in if I want. Not helpful! It started around 3:00 with painless tightening that was timeable and then it progressed to period like cramps about two hours ago and now this. My EDD is tomorrow, 4/27.

Anyway...how the hell do you know when to go in? Just because they aren't painfully unbearable yet am I supposed to read anything in to that? Plus the hospital is 40 minutes away. Help me. And my DH is not helpful. He keeps asking if he will have time to nap, feed our farm animals, and shower before we have to leave. It's too much for me to think about so I'm asking for genuine advice from you btdt ladies. Thanks.

They might keep you, they might send you home but either way you're not going to get any rest if you're still awake, stressed, and debating your options. I'm no dr, but I say tell DH to go get whatever he needs done now and go on in and get checked out :) he can nap at the hospital if there is time. P.S. My DH is a farmer as well, he's constantly reminding me he'll have to check cows before we leave for the hospital :) good luck!!

I personally wouldn't go until I just couldn't stand to stay at home anymore. I left when I felt my pain scale was around a 5 when my contractions were about 3 1/2 minutes apart and lasting a minute. When I got to the hospital (which was 1 1/2 hours away for us) they were about 3 minutes apart and a minute, and they weren't able to check me for a couple of hours after being there. After having contractions for 14 hours, I was only 4cm and 90% effaced.

  • That's what my gut is telling me. The L&D nurse was so casual about it that I was thinking maybe I was FTM overreacting.

@emh81‌ Yeah! That's been the big thing! I'm like, the pigs will not starve, they have plenty fat reserves and the cows can eat the grass you spent all that time planting. Or just sit there and moo for all I care! Ha!

  • @SLSchuerg‌ Did they admit you?

Also, are contractions from the top of your belly to the bottom? Mine are just at the bottom like a period. I assumed since my uterus is up to my freaking ribs I would feel it contracting up there too. The BH were up there, but these are not.

I would just go if I were you. My contractions were 6-7mins apart but were getting stronger and painful. They were gonna send me home until my water broke.

  • With DS1 I kept calling and they said to come in when things got more painful. I finally decided to go in (even though I only had tightening and not pain/cramping) and was dilated to 6 and had DS1 3 hours later. The same thing happened this time, but I had 3 false alarm trips to L&D. By the time it got "painful" with both kids, I was already 8-9cm and within 30 minutes of delivery. Pain is not a good gauge for everybody, I would just go with your gut, even if it means you might get sent home. DH says it's better than having the baby on the side of the road.
  • I'd go if I were you but I wouldn't be surprised if they sent you home. In our birth class the nurse described the difference between pre-labor and active labor as this: if you're in active labor you do not think about anything but getting through the pain. So if you're thinking of other things then you may not be in active labor.

Then again when it was time for me to deliver LO the midwife in L&D suggested that i labor at home for a few hours and I didn't listen to her and went in. It's a good thing that I didn't listen to her because I went from 4 to 10 cm in 2hrs and had I stayed home, I may have not made it to the hospital
  • Oh, and why exactly does your DH need to fit a nap in before you go through labor?

Great question!!! I'm trying not to focus on that right now. My guess is he is selfish. He told me he can't wait to get to the hospital so he can sleep. WTF? I didn't know that was part of the birth plan until tonight. I also think he has no clue what's about to happen. He's a wait and see kind of guy. Research is just a pain to him and what do the doctors, nurses, and experienced patents know anyway?

I'm going to head in soon. Things are intensifying...especially when I'm laying down. Did the shower thing for a bit but ran out of hot water. Ha! I would rather be sent home I think. Than have her in the side of the road! :-)

  • They did admit me but only because my BP was high. I guess everyone's responses just goes to show everyone is different and you just have to judge for yourself when it's time to go and when to stay home a little while longer. Good luck! :)

  • I would go, I had period like cramps and bleeding when we got in the car to go to the hospital ( 6 miles away). I then had a contraction at 12 min, 6 min, 3 min, 1 min and I was at hospital. It wasn't super bad until the end so I doubted myself during the ride . I'm
Glad I went, I wouldn't have made it if I waited.

  • My L&D nurse was equally as 'meh' over the phone. I decides to go in anyway and turns out I was at a 9! Glad you went in!
