Irritated with hospital and pharmacist! Long sorry-rant

So i had my 16 week appt monday. Woke up felt a little nauseous but went and all was great doc said i gained a total of 9lbs but was bery happy with this. So i start my hour drive home and had to pull over on the expressway to puke in the trash bag i leave in my car. Ok, fine. Still not feeling well i continue home. I get home and continue to get sick every couple hours for 24hours straight. I cannot even keep water down. So tuesday DH and I call into work and he takes me to ER as ive now lost 8lbs and still not keeping even water down.
Get to ER they give me fluids and zofran, write it off as morning sickness. I feel better but still not 100%. Fast forward to friday afternoon. Get a call from ER follow up and they say i have a significant bladder infection and ER doc wants me to be on antibiotics immediately. (Oddly i had NO symptoms of this! And i know enough medical stuff to know if this spreads to a severe kidney infection it could cause preterm labor!) WAIT, i was there on tuesday and you call me friday afternoon to tell me this?! Ok fine call in a script.
So now that i have little faith in them, i follow up with the pharmacist to make sure the antibiotic they were prescribing was safe to take during pregnancy i get the answer of "yeah it should be". WHAT?! I dont want to hear that being a FTM i want to know, YES or NO! So i fill the script to get the name and call my OB with all of this story and its safe to take.
Ugh just annoyed about this whole interaction! Thanks for listening to my rant!!

Ugh that is definitely frustrating!!! Sorry this happened, but glad you finally have an answer and a safe antibiotic/plan.

Four days does seem like a long time, usually urine cultures take 2-3 days to come back and we call pt's immediately, especially for the reasons you outlined! The ED is such a crazy place, no one follows up on their patients, etc. That's why I'm so glad my OB has our patients triaged at our outpatient office and then go two floors up to be treated in labor and delivery. Our poor mama's can get lost and kicked to the curb in the crazy place that is the ED.

    Is your nausea/vomitting better now?

  • Wow, your frustration is completely understandable! Sorry to hear your going through this mess. I'm also very happy to hear that you are feeling better! FX that everything is back to "normal" very soon!

  • Three days is about as long as it has taken me to hear back with urine culture results as well. It's annoying. I'm glad you are starting to feel better.

  • I'm sorry you're not feeling well and are frustrated. Just so you know, the test for a urinary tract infection is a urine culture and sensitivity test. They take some of your pee and put it in a Petri dish and let it grow for 48-72 hours. Then they test any bacteria that grew to see what antibiotics it would be susceptible to. Sometimes preliminary results would be available earlier, but in order to prescribe the correct antibiotic the doctor would need to give the lab 3 days to complete the test. So while it's frustrating to have to wait, the hospital is doing their job properly and notified you in a timely manner.

With that being said, I hope you're feeling better. Make sure you rest up, drink lots of fluids, and finish the full course of antibiotics.

  • FX that you feel better soon.
  • Feel better soon. Very frustrating and to not feel good on top of that sucks.

  • I was flagged for a bladder infection at my 10 week appt during my last pregnancy. It took them 2 weeks to get a hold of me and prescribe antibiotics! Bladder infections are really weird during pregnancy!
