How does the baby come out?

Just curious how others handle this. What's your answer when your kid/kids ask how the baby comes out? I'm not sure what to tell my daughter. I don't want to completely make something up like the stork brings it but I don't want to be totally blunt and graphic about it either.

  • My students think the doctor just takes the baby out (2nd grade special education classroom). I neglected to explain more than what their knowledge was.

  • I could be wrong but I think my daughter will question more if I just say the doctor helps take it out. I did have a c section with her but I'm hoping to have a VBAC this time. I don't think she understands the concept of surgery yet so maybe I'll try to figure out another way to explain that to her that would make sense.
  • I said between my legs, and then I think I even told them out of my lady parts.  But then I changed the subject.

True story, my brother asked my mom this question when he was a littlekid.  She says she must've vaguely said "down there."  Fast forward several years later in health class, my brother is 13 and they're talking about birth.  He raises his hand and asks, "But when does the doctor cut open her leg and take the baby out?"  Somehow he got the idea that the baby comes out through an incision in the mother's leg!!  Um, almost!

  • I told my son (almost 4) that it comes out of a hole that mommy has between her legs. I explained that boys have penises and girls have holes.

Last night he asked for the first time how the baby got in my tummy. I told him it grew from an egg I had inside me.  That satisfied him for now.

  • I'm not sure how my neice found out, but she does know about VB vs CS. Shes asked me about LO coming out, and I've just said "we'll see"

  • My 6 year old asked me the other day how the baby will get out of my tummy.  Totally caught me off-guard and I just said "It ... comes out...of...mom's tummy."  I clearly did not handle it well.

I read the title and my first thought was "Are you serious?" then I read the rest of the post and it totally made sense.

DD is too young to know or care though, so I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
That would be quite the thread if I was seriously asking lol
    Edited: spelling sucks
  • I like the idea of answering the specific question without volunteering any additional information unless requested by the child. So I would probably say out Mommy's vagina and leave it at that.
  • We are very honest with Stella. She knows that babies come out of vaginas.

The second one just falls out.

    Right?????

Only if you've been fisting in preparation though.

DH may have the flu, but I told him prepping my vagina was top priority.

He's wearing a face mask and yellow rubber dish washing gloves.
    I think we're set.

  • We'll be straight forward with it and pray that DS doesn't push it further as to how the baby got in there. lol  He knows that girls have 'ginas (as he calls it) and boys have penises.  He also knows that breasts are for baby's food. Since I've only had vaginal births so far, I want to continue to be truthful on it as much as possible.

  • I followed the movie Knocked Up approach. The girls ask me how does the baby come out? I say "how do you think it comes out?" they respond. I absolutely LOVE hearing the responses. My 7 year old is brightly aware. the 4 year old, not so much. And Im OK with that.

  • my oldest asked when we had his brother and we told him that the doctor cuts mommy open and pulls the baby out. We knew we were having another c/s. He asked if i was going to get hurt and we said no. When he came to the hospital to meet his brother we showed him my scar and he was totally cool with it. My youngest hasnt asked and we arent even going to mention it, all he knows is mommy goes to the hospital and then he gets to see the baby.
  • Our dd is 6 and wanted more info so we satisfied her by saying it comes out of mommy's pee pee. She asked if it hurts and I said yes and that was that. I'm really not looking forward to here asking how it gets in there.
  • My 7 year old daughter asked me, and I just told her the doctor takes the baby out. A couple of days later, my 3 year old asked me if I was going to explode when the baby comes out. I assured her I would not be exploding because the doctors wouldn't let that happen. I just find it amazing what these kids think up.
My 7 year old did ask me if it hurt and was upset when I said that it does, but I explained that the doctors give you a choice if you want some medicine to take the pain away. And mommy does.
