Breastfeeding

New to this board-nipple blisters and pain. Need some help.

DD was nursing like a champ from day one and the two LCs who saw her nurse in the hospital said everything was perfect. But she is now 5 days old and in am getting some blistering in a ridge across the end of my nipples and it hurts so I am thinking something is going wrong. She tends to comfort nurse at night and will hang on longer than she really needs to and I think that is part of the issues. But if I pull her off before she feels finished she is very difficult to soothe.

From the outside it looks like her latch is the same, but I do know that sometimes if I start relaxing too much while she's feeding or start bumping and not paying attention I can feel her shift.

So has anyone gone through this and what is the best way to fix? How do I tell what to do with her latch if it still looks the same from the outside? When she is comfort nursing, would you switch sides, pull her off before she is finished, or something else? What are some of the best ways to relieve my sore nipples in the meantime? I have been putting BM on them when she is finished and letting them air out, the applying lanolin.

Tia!

As for healing your sore nipples, the breastmilk trick helped me a ton! The lanolin did nothing for me, though. It created a sticky mess on my nipples. I found Motherlove Nipple Cream worked SO much better; it's olive oil based. Continue to apply the milk and cream and they will heal.

The latch situation I may not be an expert on since I'm a FTM, but I just continuously checked the effectiveness of the latch in the early days. If it was extremely painful, I unlatched DD and tried again. It was pretty painful until my nipples healed, but after about 5 days things started to feel better. Comfort nursing is pretty important for your supply, so I'd leave her on as long as you can stand it. Will she take a pacifier or suck on your finger for comfort?

It sounds like you're really working hard to get it right! Just be vigilant about the latch looking and feeling good and your nipples will heal. Good luck!

  • I watched a video on Kellymom and really watched her latch this afternoon and I think I figured out our issue. Unfortunately I think I have to forego bumping and FB while BFing for a while as I have to really hold her in place. Which is fine - much better than having blistered sore nipples.

She hates a pacifier (tried last night) so it seems to be my nips or nothing. Now that we (maybe) have the latch right I can probably stand it a bit better.
