12 month old and wet diapers

On A's 1 year birthday daycare started giving A just sippy cups with meals no bottles. I am really worried about his hydration. I still BF 2 times a day but his diaper amount has decreased drastically. Daycare reports about 2 diapers from 8 am - 4pm. I change him twice at home and he is barely wet. His urine does not seem concentrated and his lips seem fine but I am so worried he is not getting enough fluids. He goes to the Pedi on Tuesday. Any mom's out there have or had this concern? How many wet diapers does your LO have? What is considered wet because sometimes his wet is almost dry. Any help would be appreciated. TIA

Re: 12 month old and wet diapers

  • When DS had the stomach bug around his 1st birthday, the doctor told us every 6 hours we should have a wet diaper - which seemed like very little pee to me! Hopefully your ped will have some advice. I'm sure his intake will pick up as he gets more used to the cups. Good luck :)

  • Hmm. E soaks a diaper every 3 hours and always has. (Granted we use cloth, but still.) She gets 5 diapers while I'm at work. Another when I get home and one before bed.
Does e not get sippies between meals? E gets milk during meals and water between meals. She drinks 32 oz a day.

A gets a cup of milk when she wakes up, afternoon snack, and before bed ~15 ounces
she drinks water with meals and as she wants during the day ~10 ounces
She pees like a racehorse! We are using size 5 diapers now and her overnight diaper must weigh 1.5 pounds. She has 5-6 wet diapers during the day.

H gets a sippy of milk at meals and juice/water in between, so roughly 5-6 a day. We change his diaper around 6:30am when he gets up and he gets to DC by 7. Between 7 and 4-5, DC changes two wet and either one or two dirty diapers. We also get 1-2 more wet diapers at home, so that makes 4-5 wet a day and 1-2 dirty.

  • Not sure on the water volume or diapers (I'm not super observant) plus J is sneaky and drinks water from too many different sources. J loves her camelbak kid water bottle! She couldn't figure out the tilt of a sippy, so after watching her steal our water bottles, DH got her one. She loves it! So maybe try a different cup/bottle?

M is  a camel and doesn't drink much.  I worry about him all the time ever since we started weaning BF (he's completely weaned).  He seems to have enough wet diaper though. Some days they are kind of dry, while other days they are soaked.  I think you just have to trust your LO to know when to drink when he's thirsty.

M drinks no more than 8oz of plain WCM the entire day (he gets it at meals) and no more than 8oz of water (between meals).  Often he's so busy playing that he forgets to drink water.  I find that if I offer him water right before putting him down for naps, he'll drink more.  I was so concerned about the low milk intake so I've been making him a smoothie daily.  The smoothie has 4oz WCM and 4oz yogurt, plus about 4oz of fresh/frozen fruits.  So the smoothie comes out to 12oz.  Some days he'll drink the entire 12oz in 1 go, other days he'll drink most of it and he gets the rest after dinner.  The smoothie is the only way I can get him to drink lots.

Having said that, M usually eats a lot of fruits (almost 2 cups?) so I know he gets plenty of fluid that way.

Does your DS have access to water during the day?  Can you try smoothie, or more fruits?  I am not a fan of fruit juice, FWIW.

  • I change at least every 3 hours, before nap, or when dirty- or super soggy- no matter how wet/dry. There are times when they feel really dry, but are wet if I put my finger to the fabric (gross!!). I was also worried, as I have to constantly remind them to drink water. We keep it out for them and refill as needed. They can easily down a straw cup of milk, so I know they are getting something. I just wish I could get a little more water into them.

  • I don't remember how many diapers ds had but when he is home he always has a sippy cup with water available to him and his milk he will have with meals. Maybe suggest to daycare you want a sippy cup a water out for your lo to drinking or have them offer it to your lo in between meals during the day.
