February 2014 Moms

anyone else not really getting social smiles yet?

LO is 8 weeks today and we've only gotten a handful of smiles. The past few days when I get her either for the MOTN feeding or first thing in the morning, she'll give a big grin, but she's sleepy, so I don't even know if those are legit.  Otherwise, there have only been a couple of "real" smiles over the past week or so.  Everything I've read says 6-8 weeks, so I really thought they'd be more consistent by now. Is this something I should be worried about?  Is she just a serious baby? She was full term, so being early shouldn't be an issue in terms of milestones... TIA!

  • DS1 was a late smiler - maybe ten weeks? I was very worried as those last weeks passed, but now at almost 2, he's the most social little guy.

Keep watching for them, and if you're still concerned, mention it as his next appointment.

  • 10 weeks was the turning point here too. He's super generous with them now but it was work to get them before that.
  • LO just turned 9 weeks and we still have to try for them unless it's early in the morning. once she gets going we'll usually get a couple in a row but like PP said, it's hard to get on camera. I heard they really start coming around 10/11 weeks!

  • Wanted to add that I really noticed a huge development boost at 10-11 weeks. Smiling, clasping her hands together and even trying to swat at toys (unsuccessfully but you can tell she's trying). 8-9 weeks were BRUTAL here. I needed those smiles to get me thru and she was just not giving them out much.

  • 11-12 weeks here.  He was 3 weeks early though.
  • Thank you so much -- I feel so much better! Of course my mom just came over and grandma gets like 3 smiles! At least that just tells me I'm bad mother, not that she's delayed...I kid I kid (sort of).

  • You are not a bad mother! We're going to start a wide range if milestones soon. Especially crawling, walking, talking. We may as well get used to all our kids being different.

My LO was only occasionally smiling, and then all of a sudden he was doing it a ton! He still has plenty of serious moments though.

Sometimes I forget that some of f14 babies are up to a month (or more?) ahead of LO. Plus, every baby is different and do things at their own pace.

Yeah, I'm trying not to compare with other F14 babies, it's just books, etc. seem to say 6-8 weeks! I know these things are all just averages, but it's stressing me out a bit. Plus, things have been pretty rough around here lately so smiles would be helpful!
