My baby is a hermit?

So, I heard young babies are like potted plants and you just take them places and they sleep. That worked when DD was 2 weeks old and we had to go buy DH a car. Now? Not so much. She did well at Easter with DH's family for 30 minutes, then started crying. She cried at my 6 week OB appointment to the point my OB scooped her up and held her while I got dressed. Pitiful cry! Then she woke up within 5 minutes of arriving at my office for a short visit with my coworkers. She cried. And cried. And cried. I changed her, tried to nurse her, nope. She screamed in the car the whole way home and finally passed out once she was here.

Today, we visited my in-laws for lunch at their house. She was SO tired I thought she'd fall asleep on the way there, but nope. And she wouldn't fall asleep the whole 3 hours we were there, despite nursing, rocking, changing her diaper, etc. She just cried. And cried all the way home. And then fell asleep LITERALLY as I was pulling into the garage.

I have determined that there are two main problems: She hates her carseat AND refuses to sleep anywhere except at home. Is this normal 6-week-old behavior? Is it a phase? Or does she just sense that I prefer being at home and she's inheriting homebody tendencies from me and DH? Because..... I really WANT to get out of the house a little bit. Just for a little bit. I want to go get non-keurig coffee and maybe a gelato. Even going for a walk makes her fuss. And when she fusses in public, I get stressed. And then going out is not worth the emotional drain. Halp?

  • Also: I need to go shopping for a dress for an event in a couple of weeks. I can't decide whether to pump milk and leave LO at home with DH, or bring them both with me so DH and I can have some time together but basically have the whole day go to hell because my baby won't nap while we shop.

She has taken one bottle then wanted to BF for a bit in addition... But I honestly have no idea how much she would need. I have a few 2oz bags in the freezer, so she wouldn't starve. DH would do fine... I'd just miss him! :)

  • I've worn her during one trip and that did help, although it isn't really an option for visits to my in laws or trying on dresses. She's actually sleeping in the wrap right now because after missing a nap she was so pissed that she wouldn't even sleep in her swing. She's out cold in the wrap after fussing for just a few minutes.

  • Maybe DH can wear her... We can try it at home tonight and see how she does. I don't know if she's still in mommy-clinging mode like she was last week.

  • Does she get really hot in the car seat? Both DSs got really hot in their car seat and they would just cry and cry. Also if you are stressed and anxious about your LO crying at places other then home she might feel that which is why she won't calm down.

  • Mine seems to be skipping her naps too and being a little momma clingy lately.

And funny enough I also need to get a dress soon and was wondering the same thing... Should I bring her or leave her with DH.

We also have a family party this weekend I'm dreading for a few reasons... Mostly cause everyone wants to hold her but she'll get too overstimulated. So I've decided that my SO and I will wear her and everyone else can just admire from afar.

Keep in mind a screaming baby is way worse for the parents than the people around them.

Maybe our screamers are just dealing with the 6 week growth spurt a little differently ? Good luck! Let me know if you find anything that works for you.
  • 1. Try having dh wear her

    2. Pump and go alone. Dress shopping is stressful enough without someone yelling at you.

    3. RELAX!! Babies cry...it's honestly much louder to you than it is to everyone else. Go get your coffee, go to the store, go wherever you want. If she cries, don't worry about it. If people looked at me when dd cried as an infant (which was pretty much constant) is either say 'wow she's pissed!!' Or 'doesn't she have a beautiful singing voice!?' Then I would continue on.

    4. My DS is about as laid back as any baby I've seen and he HATES his car seat. Flips out when he is in it then instantly calms when he is out. Dd was the same way minus the calming once she was out part. I think they dislike being restrained like that.
  • Does she like white noise? With DS1, I downloaded the white noise app and used to tuck it in the stroller when we were out and about, playing the "extreme rain" sound. That bought us many restaurant meals!

But yeah, I'd shop without her.

  • For the last week I have been working on getting LO on a schedule. It's been rough. I read Baby Wise and have been using that as a guide. Today I actually made it to Starbucks, the post office, and then a 30 minute walk at the park with no crying!

Obviously every baby is different, but getting on a good eat, play, sleep schedule is allowing me more freedom to leave the house without crying. However, he likes the carseat and the ergo so they don't wake him up if he is sleeping.

She does like white noise... especially running water. When she has a freak out at home she is immediately calmed if I turn on the bath faucet. I will find a white noise app!

DH has offered to wear her in the sling and take her shopping in other stores (video games, I'm sure lol) while I try on dresses. Might be a good compromise. He's so freaking calm that she may not melt down with him. :P
