question on twins

My last missed period was on March 5th, but when I had an abdominal ultrasound done today, it showed 2 sacs and measured a gestational age of 5w5d.  I thought I was more like 7w2d along.  What does gestational age mean, and if I'm having twins, did the embryo maybe split at some point, which is why it's smaller?  My doctor isn't at all concerned and wants me back in a week.  They didn't do an internal mostly because I was too nervous for one of those yet.

  • Congrats on your pregnancy. And why the hell were you nervous for an internal ultrasound if it could of gave you more answers to your pregnancy? You do know that a huge head is going to come out of your vagina right? Or they will have to make an incision to get out your baby/babies? I know for me, a wand going up my vagina is smooth sailing compared to what's about to happen!
I don't understand why people are afraid of the vaginal ultrasound either. It's less uncomfortable for me than getting a pap smear! And you can see baby more clearly  :)

  • True, but for me: something going inside is a lot harder than something coming out.  I really only appreciate answers about the twin/dating question, not about the ultrasound.

  • Do you know the exact date of ovulation? It could be that you ovulated later in your cycle (LMP assumes a 28 day cycle with ovulation on day 14, that isn't the cease for most ppl) plus depending on how quickly it implants can be a day or row difference. Also ultrasounds (esp abdominal at this point) can have an error margin of about four days I believe. Your twins could be identical or fraternal (two separate eggs fertilized by two sperm) but I don't think it's possible to tell at this point which it was.

  • A TV U/S is not painful and at this point in your pregnancy the most accurate tool you have as far U/S. I have had lots of TV U/S and they really aren't bad.

If you are simply going by the date of your last period, the gestational age may differ because you ovulated later. This is not uncommon.
  • Gestational age is how far along you are. Its normal to be up or down a few days. More than a week can indicate either a discrepancy in ovulation calculation or a non-viable pregnancy. If your doc is not concerned, I wouldn't be either but a u/s would have calmed those fears. Try not to be too scared of the dildo cam...I had twins and believe me...I would welcome that thing in my cooter daily if it meant blocking out some of the things I felt and went through carrying and delivering twins.

  • TBH, a transvaginal ultrasound at this point is much more accurate.  If you are refusing the TV, then you are just going to have to wait it out until the abdominal ultrasound will tell you more.

So explain to me how a small TV wand scared you but your partners penis did not. How do you feel about tampons? Dildos?

How'd you manage to get knocked the fuck up without something going inside. Typically it's a dick, then sperm... But sometimes a doc can do the "putting something in". Also. You're going to be eating your words after a watermelon comes out. Believe me, it's much easier to have something go in.
Perhaps she just rolled over in the wet spot.

  • come on, ladies, I'm sure we all know how we came to find ourselves on this message board. what we don't know is how other people got here. let's please be respectful of everyone here, and not assume that we all got here under the same circumstances, or with the same history. there was a specific request for information only about twins and gestational dating, and NOT replies about the TV US, we should all please try to be more considerate.

  • @ectyrer08‌ She should ask her doctor her questions or find her way to the multiples board for twin questions. She should not be surprised that all if us who are 3 seconds pregnant aren't all knowing on the subject of twins sooooooo

  • I don't blame you for not being comfortable enough to do the internal u/s yet, from experience it isn't painful just a little uncomfortable!
  • I am shocked to hear that a tv u/s is painful or uncomfortable. It's thinner than a penis. I mean they push around a little but your doc shouldn't be trying to gouge out your insides. Although I went to my hsg procedure before I was preggo and two girls in front of me said it was nothing then I went in and almost passed out and puked bc it was so painful.
  • I've had a a t/v ultrasound and it's not painful but yes, a little daunting. With my last two pregnancies I was 2 weeks behind my dates based in last period. According to my LMP I'm 7 weeks now, but won't be suprised I'm measuring behind when I have my scan. It doesn't mean anything is wrong, just you have probably ovulated later than the normal 14. Don't worry about it Hun and good luck with your pregnancy :) xx
