My nipple is ruined! Ouch!

My baby clamped down on my nip so hard with her rock hard baby gums and while still latched she started thrashing her head around! WTF baby?! This happened like 2 weeks ago and has caused my nip to crack and bleed in several places. One of the cracks is so deep, and goes almost completely around my nipple. There's no way I can breastfeed on that side, and pumping has been excruciatingly painful. Lanolin is not even close to helping, I got some Palmers nursing butter, which helps a little with the discomfort, but does nothing as far as healing it up. I finally called my OB yesterday and begged them to call me in a prescription without seeing me because I don't have insurance right now. They did and I'm just passing that or works because it was like 40 bucks! I'm afraid to let her nurse on our once it's healed because I can't trust her to not be violent with it! Anybody else have cracked up nipples from a violent nurser?! Anyone have luck with a prescription strength cream, or will my nip never be the same again?!

Ouch!  Nipples can heal pretty quickly when given the chance to, so maybe only pump that side not nurse for a bit, and pump minimally for a day or so to give it more of a chance to heal.  Also I found expressing some milk and letting it air dry helped heal cracks.  My LO did do a number on my left nipple due to clamping because of overabundance of milk, and I've had to use a nipple shield as a result, but it did allow things to heal and feel much better.

  • @MA&CB‌, I tried a breast shell and it gave me a rash. I've just been pumping on that side for like 2 weeks now, but I don't want to get a clogged duct so I'm still pumping every 3 hours. I think I'll try putting the cream on after pumping and then just leaving my shirt off for a bit.

Yeah, airing it out is a good idea.  I actually meant a nipple shield that you wear while nursing like this:  https://www.medelabreastfeedingus.com/products/158/contact-nipple-shield---24-mm-medium

They can tricky because the baby can get dependent on them and then you have to wean off of them, and they're kind of a pain in the ass to use, but I went from being in tears while nursing to being able to nurse pain-free for as long as he likes, so it was helpful for me.  But it's a good idea to consult with an LC when starting to use a shield.

When mine were cracked and bledding I would use lanolin before and after pumping and go topless as much as possible which was hard due to having older boys in the house! They healed pretty quick!
  • I had a pretty bad crack on my left side for a while that had me in tears every time I touched it, much less let LO nurse on it. I used lanolin before and after every feeding, pumped when it was too painful to nurse, and my mom made a salve of coconut oil and Sacred Frankincense essential oil that helped it heal in less than a week. Expressing a little BM and letting it air dry helped quite a bit, too.

When my nipples cracked with ds1, keeping them from getting wet in the shower helped them heal also.

Google Dr. Newman's APNO - All Purpose Nipple Ointment. It's prescription, and works miraculously well! My LO tore me to shreds for her first ten days due to tongue and lip ties. I was doing a layer of APNO, a layer of lanolin over that, then cabbage leaves to 'seal it all in.' You want to keep it moist - it's called wet wound care (I think?) If it dries out, it scabs and retears every time. Good luck!
  • I am using a prescription strength cream right now for a nipple that is still not healed at almost 7 weeks! It is helping but honestly what's helping most is not pumping or nursing. Guess we will be one side only nursing from now on. Cream cost me 80 bucks!

  • @Renik20‌, I think that's what I got. It's a compound prescription that they mixed up in the pharmacy, the tube says Newmans ointment. It is giving me some relief so far, fingers crossed it heals up completely. They said I don't need to wipe it off at the next pump/feed, which makes me nervous. Did they tell you that as well?
  • That sounds like the same ointment I used. I had to use it fir my first ds and this time around too. It is almost like my nipples need to harden up each time. It definitely helped me. I would put some on a breast pad after each time I nursed.

  • Oh and I used to just wipe it off the best I could before he nursed. It never bothered him. He hated the taste if lanolin.
