Potty training and pull ups

So we are currently stuck in this grey area of potty training where dd is having success going pee on the potty (no poop yet though) but is still having pretty regular accidents. I want to keep encouraging her since the interest is there and she's having some success but I'm done cleaning stuff out of her underwear multiple times a day. I was thinking pull ups are a good compromise. For those who used them to train, how long did the process take? Did using them deter your efforts?

I don't know if you want to go "backwards" but I continued to use diapers for G while encouraging toilet use. I wouldn't want to deal with all of that mess, plus I would be worried that she would get upset, or get used to wet underwear and stop caring.

That's the funny thing--she removes a wet diaper but couldn't care less about being in wet underwear. Only my kid. Lol

  • I've heard good and bad things about pull ups.  We haven't tried them yet, but I haven't ruled them out.  DS is at the point right now where he will pee on the potty only if he's naked.  He still asks for a diaper to poop.  I think I would try those cloth training pants before pull ups because at least they can feel how wet they are, and it's not as much like a diaper.

DS was like that! So odd!
  • We used them when DS was still having accidents during the day and we still use them for naps and night time.

    I hate them.

I had assumed they would be a good compromise between diapers and underwear, but they are exactly like diapers in terms of absorbency. So, DS doesn't care if he pees in them. And they are more expensive than diapers! DS is fully day trained, but if I don't make him change into underwear as soon as he wakes up, he will often just pee into the pull up. It's like it's just more convenient for him, and he doesn't care. We try to only use them for sleeping, or if we know we will be gone a very long time with no bathroom access, but I wish we were done with them. I don't know a good alternative, but just wanted to give you an honest thought on them.

::runs off to buy yet another jumbo pack of expensive pull ups::

Glad I'm not the only one with a weird kid. :)

  • Yep! my dd will pee a few drops in her undies and it doesn't bother her at all. Typically she follows that up with running to the bathroom though so I'm not too worried about it at this point and I don't change her underwear for a few drops because unfortunately it doesn't bug her. She does however hate her wet diaper after sleeping so I know she's aware of it.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • There are quite a few cloth trainers that go on like undies but have side snaps in case there's poo to deal with. You could try those.

both my boys treated pull ups like diaper. I did the undie cleaning thing. sucks but worked better.
Same here.  We did do pull ups for certain occasions (long car ride, outing), but I feel they made me some what lazy. There is no sense of urgency to stay on top of things if there's no threat of them peeing all over the couch.  Ya know?

  • We can't use them at all because my kid treats them just like a diaper. I tried using them when we were out but instead of trying to stay dry and tell me he had to go, he'd just go in the pull up. So we're in underwear all the time now, although he's been pretty successful on our third attempt this time around.
