Am I boring my baby? PIP

I wonder if I'm stimulating my LO enough during the day. Since all of our help is finally gone, we've gotten into somewhat of a routine the past couple of weeks. She's 8 weeks today. Does this sound too boring for her?

- 9am: feed, 20 minutes sitting upright on my legs singing/talking to her, then she lays in the PNP looking at the star mobile/kicking/talking while I chat with her as I get dressed, brush my teeth, etc., then she sits in the swing while I make breakfast; I talk to her until she falls asleep.

- 12pm: feed, 20 minutes sitting upright on my legs singing/talking to her, then usually we listen to music while she lays on the ground and coos at her favorite toy (a balloon) and kicks like mad for about 15-30 minutes; when she gets tired of that it's usually time for another nap.

- 3pm: feed, 20 minutes sitting upright on my legs singing/talking to her, then either more laying on the ground cooing at the balloon and kicking or we go out for a walk, sometimes both. Daddy also comes home during this time so they do some hanging out and sometimes tummy time. Also, if she's going to scream, this is generally when it starts. She's usually up from this point until about 8 unless she falls asleep on our walk or gets too fussy.

We're going to start a bedtime routine soon including a bath and a book, but I wonder if we're doing enough during the day. I'm mainly focused on keeping her from crying, so I'm sticking with what she seems to like currently.

ETA: added pic of her and balloonity because cute :)

  • Lol @Bookshelves‌ but yeah, there's really not a whole lot more at this point.

  • It's super easy to over stimulate a baby. Don't worry about under stimulating her. I honestly don't do much beyond what you do.
  • Babies don't need much stimulation besides being held and talked to/around throughout the day.

All the rest is just fine but ditto PP that it's a lot easier to overstimulate a baby than bore them. Basically boring a baby would be neglect - i.e. leaving her alone all day.

  • Yeah, this baby gets overstimulated easily, so I try to avoid it! So, another thing -- she's mainly been taking naps in her swing. A lot of times she wakes up after 30 min or so and then is sort of in and out of sleep -- 10 min awake, 10 min asleep, etc. When I see she's awake, should I engage her? I usually don't, at least not much, because I want her to keep sleeping. She just looks around if I don't talk to her until her eyes close again.

  • Yup that's plenty of stimulation, agree w pp's that less is more at this age.

As for sleeping in the swing, yeah I'd let her keep sleeping, she needs lots and lots. Babies sleep cycles are much shorter than ours, hence the frequent wakeful periods followed by drifting back into deep sleep.

    You're doing a wonderful job :)

Thanks!!! I'm still always so concerned that I'm not doing the right thing. I really still have no idea about this whole mothering thing! :)

I love that your baby is like "activity mat that someone paid good money for? Nah. Give me a half-deflated balloon."

LOL, I know, right? Changing pad + balloonity (who is still going relatively strong after 8 weeks!) beats activity mat every time these days. Maybe the activity mat toys are too close or there are too many of them? She's only ever happy there for like 5 min.

  • My baby and I usually spend 15-20 minutes discussing the morning update on NPR, during which I grill her on world capitals and the UN Security Council. Later, we share a cuppa Earl Grey while she tells me about the daily happenings of her friend, Ceiling Fan.
@bookshelve - I literally burst out laughing at this. HilARIOUS.

I am so getting a balloon today! Your day sounds a lot like mine does, too!
The key is for her to grab the ribbon (or put it in her hand) and then when she flails, the balloon moves. Continuous entertainment for all!

  • Kak808 you read my mind. I was thinking the exact thing "am I boring my baby".

Mine guy is only 2 1/2 months. He doesn't really have a routine yet but I am thinking we should. He is still so young though. I try playing with simple toys but he seems to just like sitting on my lap listening to me talk. He throws in a few smiles/laughs from time to time so I don't feel like I am completely talking up myself haha.

I just feel bad some days like we should be doing more. Glad I'm not the only one.
