Help! Suspect baby is sick

I am coming down with a cold( sore throat and running nose)and I am the only one taking care of my 7- weeks old baby at night. He usually okay with me holding him both vertical and horizontal but tonight he only allows me holding him vertically. Do you think he is having stuffy nose and couldn't breath? I tried to put him in his crib several times and it seems he would wake up 5 mins or less after. He has been awake for 4 hours but didn't cry for anything else. He likes to be held all the time even before today so he cries when he wakes up is not much differently from other days. I would take him to ER if he is sick but I couldn't tell if he is. What is the sign when baby has stuffy nose?

Re: Help! Suspect baby is sick

  • are you concerned at all about the rate of his breathing or does it look like it is difficult for him to breathe? if you can see his ribs when he is breathing, if his nostrils are flaring in and out when he calm and breathing, or he seems to be breathing more than 80x/min (count for a full minute, babies do periodic breathing and if you count for shorter than 60 seconds and multiply you will get the wrong number!)- then you should call your pediatrician and have him seen!

  • Unless there's more to it than this, he doesn't need to go to the ER.  Sure, he could be fighting a little cold but unless he's actually having trouble breathing or has a fever it's not a huge deal.  His change in temperment could be completely unrelated since at this age they change their wishes constantly.

  • Thank you for the tips and advice! Baby finally went to sleep after five and half hours awake. I don't have saline drop in stock. I am going to get some today in case he needs in the future.
