Success after IF

Peanut.... Peanut butter....

Will not be served at my house in the near future :(

Gave it to DD for the second time today and by the time I took her out of the high chair the blotchiness had set in :(

She got red and blotchy all over her face and hand but thankfully no breathing issues. Gave her benedryl (per pedi) and its pretty much gone but what a horrible day. I just sat on pins and needles waiting to see if she got worse. And of course there was plenty of other stuff she could've had for lunch - I felt terrible (even though I know I had no idea).....and selfishly - I love peanut butter! I really hope this is either a fluke or she grows out of it!!!

Re: Peanut.... Peanut butter....

  • I'm sorry about your DD. I suggest asking for a referral to a pediatric allergist for further testing.
Not to be Debbie Downer, but peanuts are not an allergy that is usually outgrown. More like there will be some kind of immunotherapy that treats people with PA.

  • I plan on talking to the pedi at her 15 month appt about going to the allergist. My BFFs daughter has a severe allergy and she suggested feeding it to her again right before the next appt. No way I can do that in fear it'll be worse than this time. I really just want to get her tested at thus point. MH is in denial "we aren't positive that's what she reacted too..." Um, yeah...ok.

Question for you ladies though; what's your pedis recommendation on when to introduce peanut butter. A year seemed early to me and her reaction was so mild I can't help but wonder if she's just not ready for it yet. Would love to hear your feedback. There is no peanut allergies anywhere else in the family and LO hasn't had an issue with any other food (knock on wood).... So I'm shaking my head on this one.

  • Sorry your LO had a reaction. My pediatrician told us not to wait with any potential allergy producing foods since we have no family history of food allergies, so we tried them all before 1 year old. No reactions here. I would be sad to no longer have peanuts in the house (MH is addicted to them).

Scary!  My DS has a peanut allergy.  We had no family history of food allergies either.  DH was devastated - peanut butter and jelly is his favorite!  We gave DS peanut butter not long after he was a year.  He didn't like it, but didn't react.  We tried a few other times and he still didn't like it.  When DD was 15 months old, and he was 2.5, I tried to give DD a bite of my sandwich.  She refused but DS wanted a bite.  He took one, then a minute later started gagging, retching, and his eyes started getting puffy.  He also was getting hives.  We immediately gave him benadryl and he was ok.
We took him to the pedi and she did the RAST blood test, which was positive for peanut and egg allergies.  We got an epi pen then.  He is now 5, and we are planning to take him to the allergist to get retested.  I think it is unlikely he has grown out of it (he has bad eczema and seasonal allergies anyway), but I have a friend whose little girl grew out of her peanut allergy, so it is worth a shot!
Life with peanut allergy is a little scary and challenging.  You have to really check labels because so much is processed in a plant with peanuts.  I taught my DS pretty much since he reacted (age 2.5) that he can't eat anything with peanuts and to always ask an adult if there are peanuts in anything before he eats.  I am worried about birthday parties and play dates without me as he gets older.  For now, I always pack him a safe snack or cupcake for a party, and he is fine with that.  He is really good about it and is super picky anyway, but it makes me nervous!

ETA - I also have no idea if DD#2 is allergic.  DD#1 grabbed peanut m and ms and a snickers bar and shoved them in her mouth at a party  (2 different parties - I am not that bad of a parent...) before I could get to her.  She was fine - so thank goodness she isn't the one with the allergy...I could never trust her!

Ugg :( we may be dealing with a peanut butter problem too :( I finally put it together that three out four times she has has pb&j, she got red around her mouth. The last time it looked like hives for about 20 seconds and then started clearing up. DH and I have no food allergies.

My plan is to ask the pedi at her 15 month appt and go from there.
