Breastfeeding

weaning from breastmilk

DS2 nursed exclusively until he was about 10 months old.  He suddenly refused the breast (I think it was because of teething) and started taking a bottle.  Try as I might, he still will not go back to the breast.  He will be 1-year-old in two weeks, so I am trying to figure out how to wean him from breastmilk.  I am renting a hospital grade pump and pumping 30 oz./day, but I can't see myself doing this much longer.  It is just too time consuming for me, and we'll be moving across the country in June, which I think would make pumping full-time kind of difficult.

So, my question is, how does transitioning from breastmilk usually work?  Will I have to start mixing WCM in little by little, or do some babies just switch right over with no problems?  As I decrease pumping, is it okay to give him some bottles of 100% breastmilk and some of WCM or will he get too picky about it?

I plan to discuss this with his pediatrician, but we don't go until May 12.  And I feel kind of clueless because DS1 nursed until he was 17 months.  He very gradually cut back his nursing, and I gradually added in WCM some time after he was 1-year-old, so it was much easier.

Thanks ladies!

Re: weaning from breastmilk

  • I don't know about how it usually works, but with my first son, we didn't mix the breast milk and the cow's milk in a single bottle.  We just worked in a bottle of cow's milk into his daily routine.  He actually never indicated that he could tell any difference whatsoever (Come on dude, I worked so hard for those breast milk bottles, at least pretend you can tell a difference!  :) ), so it was a smooth transition.  At that point (the 1 year mark), he had already had yogurt and snippets of cheese (with stuff like mac and cheese), so he was somewhat familiar with dairy.

  • you can just start offering WCM on its own. if your LO likes it, you don't need to do a gradual transition. if he doesn't like it, you can mix it with BM, gradually using a larger and larger portion of WCM. how you do it depends on 1) if you have frozen BM you want to get rid of and 2) if your DS likes the taste of the WCM. i don't think there's really a right or wrong answer-- once he's one he can go completely to WCM anyway.
