Someone on my BMB suggested that I check over here too to see whether anyone's been in a similar position.
One of my clients reached out about an open position with their organization. It's not the best time to make a career move being 4 months pregnant to an organization that's too small to qualify for FMLA leave, but it's basically a dream job (CFO of a medium sized not-for-profit), so I don't want to pass up the opportunity. Since this is a client that I work with frequently, they already knew that I'm expecting and they asked that I come up with a plan for how I'd handle the time off if I get the job (they're interviewing other candidates; I'm not sure how good my chances really are). I have no idea what to offer. On one hand, I do want the job and am tempted to promise the moon ("Sure, I'll be available 24/7 by phone or email"), but I don't want to over promise/under deliver (I do remember those first few weeks) or take too much time away from the new baby. Anyone have any experience with anything similar?
Re: XP from December 2012: Interviewing/Pregnancy
Given that it's a new position, I honestly don't think a long maternity leave like 6 months is reasonable. Personally I would ask for 8 weeks, just in case you have a C-section. Like PP said, also tell them that you will come up with a plan for transitioning your tasks before you go out on maternity leave. And I wouldn't commit to doing anything during those 8 weeks - to me that time is to bond with your baby and you don't want to stress yourself out caring for a baby and trying to keep up with things at work. Be honest with yourself though and decide what you are willing to commit to during your maternity leave.
I am in a similar position - a company just approached me about a position and I am 4 months pregnant. If I choose to pursue the opportunity, I will likely ask for 8 weeks unplugged just like I discussed above. If the company truly values you, they should be able to see past this short term leave to your long term contribution to the company.
Good luck!
