Hi ladies. This is gonna be long, so grab a snack and get settled in ;-)
We're so excited to announce that our little Madeline is here, joining us 3/27 at 20 inches and 7 lbs 9 ozs! Smack btwn her 2 due dates (26th was based on cycle, 28th on growth scan). Though not without some big scares unfortunately.
I had gone to the doc that Wednesday, was 4 cm still feeling nothing so she did a sweep and we scheduled induction for the next week. Went to get DHs car worked on after getting lunch with him, took a walk. Went home, worked and walked some more. Decided a spicy dinner was in order, ate and settled down to watch Gravity. About that time I noticed I was having some uncomfortable cramping really low in my pelvis, like period cramps on crack and maybe some gas/poopy like pains - but only in my front pelvic area, so I got on the yoga ball to try and relieve them. Took me through the duration of the movie to finally realize the pains weren't going away and seemed regular/time able. Sooo I started timing.
After about 45 minutes unconvinced myself it was just gas/bm related, but after doing those and nothing changing I kinda knew this was it. Called the doctor, said to come in and get checked to be sure. So off we went with me still saying "oh watch the car rise make them stop" but it didn't.
Checked into the hospital at 11 pm, was at 5 cm with contractions ranging from 3 to 5 min apart and got admitted. Had epidural placed by probably 1 am but had to have it reassessed and more, stronger meds bc after an hour I could tell only my left side was numb - was less painful but still could feel a great deal on the right. Thank god for kind and good anesthesiologists! We tries to sleep as best we could btwn 3 and 6-7 am but honestly I got maybe an hour tops in pieces bc of the blood pressure cuff going off every 30 min. That sucked, I won't lie.
From there everything went well honestly. Textbook my nurse said. Progresses well on my own, was able to avoid the Pitocin, and by 12 pm I was at 10 cm (after another Epi top off around 11 am). Apparently all 3 women in labor that time all hit 10 at the same time- but it was ones 3rd and the others 2nd so i opted to labor down til they delivered since I wasn't feeling that pressure to push. Finally it was my turn and after maybe 15 minutes of pushing, a 2nd degree midline tear and a torn labia, Madeline was here and the scary part began.
They placed her on my chest and started suctioning her lungs as they prepped me for skin to skin. I literally saw the top of her head for 1 min max before they realized something was wrong and took her to the warmer. DH hovered over her as i tried to see what was going on. They couldn't get the fluid out of her lungs and after a few minutes whisked her away with DH running behind. He texted me updates as I literally sat there totally alone, terrified and unable to move bc of the drugs with zero information other than what he was sending.
After 45 min he came back saying they think she aspirated a ton of amniotic fluid on her way out and just couldn't get it up. All I could think about was how despite being more than adequately treated, I was still GBS + and so scared. We sat there for over 3 hours asking for information and getting nothing until DH finally got so upset he went to the NICU to demand someone talk to him/us. Finally came to our room 20 min later to say she'd had some questionable labs, aspirated so much fluid she was basically drowning and couldn't clear it - was put on a respirator (tube down her throat and nose), antibiotics and stuff through an emergency IV live via her belly button, and was sedated. Que total meltdown.
Finally 8 hrs later I was able to go see her. Thankfully while the first couple days were touch and go and horrible and exhausting, she got better and better each day. She ended up being placed on antibiotics for 7 days to be safe since I was GBS+ and the labs that kept coming back irregular were indeterminate. By day 4-5 her breathing was regulated enough where I could start trying to breastfeed. It's been a challenge since she got used to the bottle and instant gratification. But after a few big fat fails the lactation nurse tries a nipple shield and she took to it immediately! So I will take that as a win. Hoping we can wean her off of it in the very near future but for now I'm ok with it so she can get more used to having to work for her food. Any tips on that from you wonderful ladies would be appreciated!
But the best, most exciting part is that today, my "I won't say how much ;-)" birthday, we get to bring her home!!! I'm so happy, yet scared, but know it's going to be amazing to finally have her HOME! We're going to "room in" at the hospital for a good part of the day to get used to eachother without all the wires and meds and make sure I am comfortable w/ how the breast feeding is going. Then plan to be home in time for DH to make dinner and start getting adjusted.
So that's our story! Sorry so long, once I got going I couldn't stop, lol. For reading, here are pics of our beautiful little Madeline!!!

Thank you! And yes it was one of the potential dates for induction - we'd scheduled for the night of the 1st and would have had her on the 2nd. So it's perfect timing ;-) Im all for keeping the shield if she won't transition, but that's really helpful to know and I may definitely send u some questions as we settle Into this new routine ;-) I'm so glad to be bringing her home! We just have to get through 2 feeds here in the hospitals NICU transition room and then were free to go!
