I love the open lay out on the main floor. I like that we have 2 floors to give everyone space to play and spread out. I love the neighborhood and our neighbors.
I hate that there is no storage on the main floor and either no closet or no master bath (we turned the master half bath into a small walk in closet).
I dislike that there is no soundproofing between upstairs and downstairs. I dislike that we have a 2 car garage and a tiny yard.
Favorite - the amount of space we have both inside and outside. I need space.
Least favorite - the topagraphy of our property. We are on almost 2 acres but have only a very small area of flat land in the backyard. The rest is all slopes and hills, some very steep. I try to embrace it's uniqueness but I really dislike it. I'd love a big flat backyard, but it's not something we can change without spending a TON of money that I would never spend.

This is what we are dealing with as well. But we are the fools who are spending a shitton if money to make it usable.
Oh I don't think it's foolish if you can make it much better! We had someone come give us a quote for leveling out the backyard as much as possible and it'd be over $20k. We just can't justify it because it still won't be ideal at all, and because we're hoping to put on a deck (which will help that situation) and finish our basement in the next couple years.

like: open floorplan, large master and big living area. In general I really love the layout.
dislike: limited storage. I hate hate my carpet and I can't wait to replace it. Oh and I hate the cheap unwashable builder grade paint. So messy with three kids. Oh and a teeny tiny pantry. We'll fix the paint and carpet in time. I'll live with the pantry, but plan on putting pull out drawers someday.
Love: The big yard for parties and the kids to play. Also love that I have an actual laundry room with lots of space, not just a random corner somewhere.
Hate: My tiny kitchen and the kids' rooms are pretty small.
Can't change the size of the rooms but we plan to move in the semi-near future.
Love: The location. We're right by a great walking trail and can walk to the park. Yet at the same time we are just a couple minutes from the grocery store and pharmacy.
Hate: Lack of yard, tiny 1-car garage, lack of space in general. We will definitely be outgrowing this place soon.
I love the backyard patio we had put in a few years ago. I hate that I don't have much hardwood floor and it's mainly carpet. I also hate that the basement is not finished off. We plan to do both of these in the future, but I wish we had all that money now. I'm not patient.
@mamaallyson wow, that is crazy that it has to be done by hand!! It sounds like your space is unusable now so it definitely makes sense for you to do that if you're able to. Ours is usable enough for what we need and we can work with it, and the deck will help, so I guess we're lucky in that sense. I was just bummed because when we picked this lot to build the house, it was mostly flat...and we had no idea how they would have to shape it for drainage reasons.

Love - more space and storage space than previous place. Nice neighborhood. Relatively close to DH's work. Nice full basement that doesn't leak.
Hate - It's a rental so we can't change anything we don't like. Only 1 car garage. Neighbor's dog thinks our back yard is its back yard, so watch out for someone else's poop... and I'd prefer a ranch. Too many stairs.
Change - Finally sold our first place that we couldn't live in (moved a few hours away for DH's work) or rent out (homeowners association), after 3 years mortgage there plus rent here. We decided to take the hit and move on. Best decision ever. We know we're staying in this area now, and we're saving up for a down payment on a place we can fix up and call our own!
Love- the area, walking distance to everything, small community, lots of local shops, lots if space, timely landlord, the court, out neighbors, first to live in it, all brand new stuff, hardwoods, garage, color (bright orange)
Could change? - no stairs, the huge sewer in the back, no carpet, lower ceilings, parking situation- need more spots for guests! more windows, & an extra bedroom.
Love: It's newer. So everything is energy efficient and pretty. After a year, it's only a bit worn in by my children.
Hate: It's newer. The neighborhood has no trees. None. And apparently no one ever thought to plan any at all. Everyone's yards are completely bare of landscaping. We planted flowers in the front bed last week. A tree, or six, is next.
Love - We built the house so we were able to choose the finishes, quiet for the most part neighborhood, really beautiful view off of our back patio, dead end street with 4 houses total, so there is really no traffic and is good for the kids.
Dislike - The douchebags that live to the right of our house and make living here stressful at times. We are finding this house is too small for what we really need long-term, would like a larger lot. There is also the fact that while the views are awesome due to living on the side of a hill, this means our street is very sloped and not great for riding bikes, scooters, etc for the kids.
Ultimately, it is the small space that will make us move. It was perfect when we were a family of 3, but feels exponentially smaller now that we are a family of 4. Though if our awful neighbors move first, I think we would stick it out longer.
Love: on the whole, I love my house. It's by far the nicest house DH and I have ever lived in. It reminds me of my grandparents house. The upstairs bathroom is beautiful-
Don't love: the kitchen is lame. The main bathroom has the wrong kind of tile and it can't get wet. The house us actually too big for us and we only use about half of it. Also, DH and I are just not city people and we really regret buying in town. It seemed like the more practical choice, but it's just not me.
Change: we will paint our house this summer (from beige to a dark violet grey) and we will probably change a few things in the kitchen, like counters, cabinets, and appliances. The yard was a mess when we moved in, so fixing that has been our main focus. We have a huge cedar tree in front of the house that DH wants to cut down. That tree is really cool, but it drops a huge amount of pollen, cones, branches, and tree sap. Certain times of the year DH has to clean the gutters every weekend.
Love: the open layout, having all the bedrooms upstairs, the master suite, and the fact that our yard backs onto a small lake so we have no neighbours behind us.
Hate: the garage is only a single-car, the driveway is narrow so it barely fits two cars side-by-side, and the small front and back yards.
Love-yard, location, high ceilings, open floor plan, not too big or small,100 years old with lots of neat built in features.
Hate-layout--bedrooms are huge while living room/eat in kitchen are smaller.
Love: The lay-out. I like having all the bedrooms upstairs, a large dining room, a large kitchen, a sunken family room
Hate: Location. DH did not want to live in a subdivision, I did not want to live far away from things or on a large property. Our house is on a dead end street next to an empty lot. It gives DH the illusion of having property, and allows me to live in a subdivision. I am constantly concerned they are going to build a big, ugly building next to us and sink our value. It also takes 20 minutes to get to any expressway or get anywhere worth going.
Since we are on a dead end street we are very isolated and I have not gotten to know neighbors because we are out of the way. The ones around me are old. There are no young kids in the sub which was important to me when we were buying.
I really dislike the colors. It is very neutral. Everything is grey and beige. DH loves neutral colors, but they depress me. I am on a mission to bring some color/life into this house.
Honestly, I wish we had never bought it. The negatives far outweigh the positives. We had been searching when the market was down and there were very few decent properties available. It was the first one we saw that was livable. We had to make a decision right away and I feel like our realtor pushed us to offer more than I wanted. DH also was pushing me into it because I made the mistake of uttering that I liked it when we walked through. He thought it was ringing endorsement. DH loves it, so I can't say too much, but I feel like I was bulldozed into this house without having any time to process.
We just moved to our forever house, so this should be mostly positive. I love the beautiful, original hardwood floors through the main level. I love having all four bedrooms on the upper level. I love having my own master bathroom that I don't have to share with my kids. The house is in beautiful location within biking distance of Lake Michigan, and the neighborhood is in a wooded area close to trails and parks. In general though, the house needs a lot of painting and updating. I would also like to finish the basement.

Love - the backyard. We're on a lake with a few other homes and the view is hard to beat. I love not having neighbors right behind us.
Hate - the color of the brick and the front door. Everyday I think about if we could paint the brick and what color would be best. The front door has mostly glass and I don't like the design in the glass. I have a weird thing about having glass in front doors. If my doorbell rings I like to be able to walk up to the door and look out the peephole to see who is there without being seen. Can't do that with this door.

There are several painted brick homes in my neighborhood. I think they look great!
Love: We back state owned land so no one can live behind us and it gives us a huge place to wander around. I also love my master bedroom.
Hate: We don't have a pantry.
Love : Style, it is a little different than the other cookie cutters in our suburb. It also has a bit of character like nooks and slanted ceilings in the kids bedrooms. I also like that it is a 1.5 story. It used to worry me having the kids on a different floor, but now my anxieties are settled.
Hate : The exterior. I want to get some siding or at least paint it. The kitchen is also on the small side. We have talked about redoing the kitchen, but I also did some organizing and that helped some. I would also like to paint the cabinetes white and put in a pretty backsplash and a newer countertop. Doesn't have to be granite but a higher quality laminate would do.
Love: huge master bedroom with lots of closet space, I have my own makeup/ dressing area, nice sized kitchen, open living space, private fenced yard (semi-rare for a townhouse), nice neighborhood
Hate: no garage, no basement, no mudroom, All of which means not enough storage
We plan on moving to a single family house with more space hopefully in the next 2yrs. We need another bedroom and bathroom as well. And we want a bigger yard.
Love: location (walking distance to parks, half mile from mine and DH's work, near family, stores) and neighborhood with mature trees. Open but unique layout. Big master bedroom. Good size, flat yard with a newly expanded deck that I love. 2-car garage.
Dislike: tiny master shower, no playroom/extra room, small attic that has the HVAC pipes terribly placed to severely limit storage. Also we're just the second house in from a fairly busy street so it's not ideal for kids playing out front.
Fix: we may redo the master bath at some point, maybe 5-ish years off. Overall we really like this place so I see us here quite a while if not forever.
