My poor baby girl (long)

DD is a really great baby and she can be so happy and fun. But she has reflux and some feeding issues that just make me sad for her because she seems to be in so much pain.

A while ago she had a night that she started crying really hard when I went to burp her and then she stopped breathing and went all limp. We called the ambulance but she was fine by the time they got here. Her doctor said that it was most likely related to her reflux and started her on a second medication. Well the poor thing did it again tonight. It is so scary. I'm calling her ped in the morning to make another appointment.

I'm about ready to quit with the breastfeeding because I don't know what else to cut out from my diet for her reflux and she seems to be not getting enough out of my milk either. She's eating more often now than she was a month ago. But she hates bottles so I don't know what I'm going to do.

This post doesn't really have a point. I'm just sad and stressed about the feeding issues we've been having and I just want her to be happy and healthy. Thanks for reading!

Re: My poor baby girl (long)

  • I'm sorry she is having a hard time with reflux.  My DS2 has silent reflux and it was brutal before we got it under control with meds and me cutting all traces of dairy out of my diet.
The only thing I can add is that it looks like she is almost 3 months old, so the increase in feedings could just be the 3 month growth spurt.  I had this scare with DS2 this week where I thought my milk had dropped but a weight check showed he had gained 2lbs in a month so the pedi wasn't concerned. He has been nursing sometimes every 45 minutes this past week, when he used to go 2-3 hours.

  • I'm very sorry you're going through this. I hope things get better.
  • I'm so sorry. We've also had a couple scary moments where M chokes on milk/stomach acid. He suddenly looks panicked, eyes go huge, red face, trying to cough. I grab him up and flip him over so it can all run out and then he cries hysterically. Thankfully he's never gone limp or blue, but it is very scary. I would not sleep if we didn't have an angelcare monitor.

We tried a combo of BM/formula, formula only, all different types of formula. In our case he does a million times better on BM alone, but that may not be the case for everyone. And while he still spits up huge amounts every day, I would say in the last month he's become more of a happy spitter. We're actually starting to wean back the meds.

I hope you're able to find a solution or that lo starts to grow our of it soon.

  • My ODS had a similar episode (we think anaphylactic reaction to milk based formula as he was primarily breastfed). Doesn't it seem like it takes the ambulance ten years to arrive?! Awful. I hope you get it sorted out soon and she feels better.

If it's truly reflux due to an immature esophageal sphincter and not an allergy or sensitivity (which is different from reflux), then this will be pretty much universally true.

@km_md -- formula stays in the baby's tummy for longer, thus increasing the chances of it coming back up due to a typical reflux situation. If you think that something you're eating is causing problems, it's probably more related to a food allergy or sensitivity rather than reflux. I hope that makes sense. Just something to consider.
  • No advice but I am really sorry your dealing with this. The ambulance ride must have been very scary! Lots of hugs! I hope your pedi can help!

Thanks everyone. It feels good to just talk about everything until I can get it figured out with the pediatrician.

@peanutmuse‌ - I definitely have considered that. It is a few other things that are making me consider the formula and the reflux is just something that we seem to still be struggling with. I'm sure that post wasn't completely coherent after watching her do that again last night.

I understand and I don't judge you for making the switch if it's right for you. I just wanted to make sure that you knew that if it's truly reflux, formula will make it worse -- not better.

    Thanks for your concern :)

  • I am so sorry you are dealing with all this and my thoughts and prayers are with you and hope that you get things sorted out quickly.  Good Luck!

  • @km_mdI'm so sorry that you've had to deal with this.  It must suck.  Just a few words of advice maybe.  If you do decide to try formula I would also keep pumping for a few days.  You wouldn't want it to end up being worse with formula then BM and be dried up and not able to switch back to BM.  Also, do you know CPR and rescue breathing just in case of an emergency?  We live about 30 minutes out of town (30 minutes from an ambulance arriving).  I'm a first responder and as a member of a volunteer fire department I have medical bags including an oxygen tank.  It's the only thing that keeps me from panicking.  The only other thing I'm worried about is anaphylactic shock so I plan to ask at the next pedi visit for an epi pen prescription for just in case.  We don't have food allergies but I have issues with skin reactions to plants and respiratory reactions to smells and my sister did have a severe reaction to spring pollen one time and my MIL is allergic to bee/sweat bee/wasp stings.
