Breastfeeding

HELP me mommas!!

My dd is 16months old and still chooses breastmilk over food she's never taken a bottle of any sort and she is a VERY PICKY eater she will take a bite of some things sometimes but it's not enough to make her full it's more of a taste. I'm struggling with trying to get her to eat more food then breastmilk, I feel like she still eats off my breasts like a newborn. Im pregnant with baby #2 and I do plan on tandem nursing but I would love if she took interest in food more often. Any tips mommas??

Mine is only 11 months, so I'm not sure I can really give advice for a child over 1, but if it were me, because she no longer "needs" breast milk as her main source of nutrition, I'd slowly begin dropping feedings and replacing with food. As long as she's allowed to nurse all day long, on demand, she's not likely going to be very hungry for solids. Start with eliminating the feedings that are not as comforting to her, probably leaving  before bed feeding for very last. I'd probably eliminate one at a time and try replacing with a small solids meal, working up to larger meals. By your child's age, she should be having at least 3 solids meals and a couple of snacks, with breastfeeding as a supplement as long as you mutually desire.

    Good Luck!!

  • Are you able to still pump or have some frozen milk stored up? If so, you could mix some of it into a few foods to help her to eat them. Can you see if she might transition to a sippy cup over a bottle? I can only imagine how hard this might be for you!

  • I have been there mama!
DD1 wasn't a picky eater, but she preferred the boob over food every time.  I called her a little milk monster.  She refused WCM.  So from 15 to 18 months she didn't gain any weight.  She was still a decent weight over all, but she wasn't eating enough.
I really struggled with this because she loved to nurse.  I needed to get her the proper nutrition though, and also I was having a hard time keeping up with her demands to nurse constantly.  I ended up going to a LLL meeting.  The moms there were great, and told me that I should set some boundaries with her.  I had been nursing on demand before, and at this point I put her on a schedule.  I nursed her in the morning, before and after nap, and before bed.  She put up a fuss for a couple of days, but then got the hang of it.  The routine was good for the both of us.
I got pregnant not long after, and ended up weaning her.
