C-Section Recovery - toilets and beds

Don't laugh! These are real issues! lol

I remember having quite a bit of difficulty getting up and down from the toilet after DS was born, but at least at our old house (ETA: and at my parents' house, where we stayed for 2 weeks) both toilets had counters next to them that I could lean on. The bathrooms in our current house do not. I've considered asking DH to add handicap rails, but I'd rather go with something less permanent. Which would be....what, exactly? I need some ideas. I'm seriously tempted to ask my doctor to write me a prescription for a walker.

We also have a taller bed and a softer, deeper (ETA: memory foam; think quicksand) mattress this time around. It's already hard for me to roll over and climb out of bed with the RLP I've had; I can't even imagine what it'll be like after surgery. I'm assuming I'll have to prop myself up on quite a few pillows for several days. I've also seen some moms mention putting a step by the bed. Does that help? Does something else help more?

Re: C-Section Recovery - toilets and beds

  • I just used my legs for my toilet. As for the bed, once I was sitting, get off of it was easy.I just kinda slid. I can't recall how I got in it!
Use my legs? Pffft. I'm a fatty pants and don't have the thigh muscles for that! lol

And our mattress is memory foam. There is no sliding permitted. Getting out of bed is like releasing oneself from quicksand. :\ I might have to borrow a comfy recliner from someone for a week. Ack.

  • Loading the player...
  • Maybe a cane from Walgreens you can keep in the bathroom to help you get up from the toilet? Our bed is soft too, but not too tall, so I don't remember having a problem with it.

  • Not sure about the bed situation but for the bathroom I would look into the toilet seats that senior citizens use to make it higher. Not sure if it's the same thing that @anniemore‌ suggested.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but I have a related question-if I end up with a c-section, will having to go up/down stairs to get to my bedroom be an issue? Should I prepare to sleep in our guest room (main floor) just in case?

  • No advice, but I remember getting in and out of bed being horribly painful.  Also, laughing was horrible.  I don't remember having a problem with the toilet, though.  Do you need stronger meds?

  • Getting out of my bed is a total bitch now and I didn't even think about after the Csection...maybe I will sleep on the couch the first week.
  • We have a high bed with a Tempurpedic mattress and I never even thought of the toilet being an issue. I guess if worst comes to worst I'll call DH for help. Yup...even getting off the toilet.

My gf just warned me about coughing and sneezing which I have been having major issues with due to severe allergies. THAT is what I'm dreading.

Laughing was bad. Sneezing and coughing were a nightmare! I think my meds were okay. I honestly wasn't in a whole lot of pain except in the situations we've mentioned. But I don't have the strongest abs or legs and we have old, low toilets, so maybe that's the difference.

We lived in a town house with a tall, narrow staircase when DS was born, so we actually stayed with my parents for 2 weeks. My doctor didn't want me navigating stairs more than once a day.

You can get a temp bed rail for your bed:

You can also get a temp safety rail/elevated seat for your toilet:

Oooh, I love the toilet rail! Thanks! Maybe I'll even see if it counts as a medical expense.

  • Can you put a chair in there to lean on? I think I just had my mom lift me while I was still too sore (DH wasn't home) to stand on my own but that didn't last all that long for me.

I'm going to look around the house for something I can push up on. If I can't find anything, I might get the cheaper rail. I don't remember having trouble for long, but I do remember a few cringe worthy trips to the bathroom. Or maybe I'm just trying to be overly prepared this time bc of the RLP nightmare I've been experiencing.

I think the bed is going to be my biggest issue. Eep.

We love in a townhouse too. I remember going slow up the stairs for a few days, but it wasn't too bad.

  • I have a small chair in our bathroom, it's actually one of my kids chairs from their little table set. I have had horrible hip pain and spd this pregnancy so this is what I have used will use after my c.

I used a step stool to get into bed last time with a 3rd degree tear.
  • Ask for an abdominal support band in the hospital. You'll be amazed at how much more mobility you have with less pain when wearing it, especially in the first 2 weeks.

Definitely this. I asked for one my second time and it was helpful. I already have it packed in my hospital bag!

  • I remember using a little pillow or something pressed up against my scar area (mid section), when I needed to move around...it cushioned some of the pain, as I am not big on taking meds, especially with breastfeeding....
