STM- Labor ?

edited April 2014 in May 2014 Moms
Posting this poll probably isn't the best way to not psych myself out about labor, but I'm curious. I mentioned last week about the new rule at my hospital that says if you have a previous c-section, they will not induce you. I asked for clarification at my appointment today, and was told that also means they can't augment labor at all if you stall or whatever. That worries me when it comes to my VBAC chances, but I'm trying to remain hopeful!

So, if you went into labor on your own, did you require augmentation at some point, or did your body just do its thing?

I hope this makes sense!

  • With DS they thought my contractions weren't strong enough to get him out since I hadn't made any progress. They gave me pitocin to try and help me out. Turned out that DS was in the pelvis wonky and was never coming out that way, no matter how strong the contractions or how hard I pushed.

So technically I didn't need the help, but I got it anyway!

  • I didn't go into labor on my own, but I only needed my water broken two times. No cytotec or pitocin.

  • I went into labor on my own, 4 days before my due date, and didn't need anything to help it along.  I had a good experience - dilated pretty quickly and pushed for only 20ish minutes.  I did have pitocin after the fact but that was because my uterus wasn't shrinking down fast enough and obv had nothing to do with augmenting labor since baby was already here.

  • I went into labour on my own, water broke at home. I ended up needing a c/s due to fetal distress (cord issues caused by baby's position). I'm also trying for a VBAC and my OB doesn't induce VBACs but she will "let" me go to 41w3d before scheduling a RCS. I'm hopful I'll go into labour before then since my water broke at 37w5d with my first.

  • Labor started totally on its own, but the doctor broke my water to speed things up at the hospital. She said there was meconium in the water, so they wanted to start pitocin to get him out quickly for that reason, so I wouldn't say I really had to have the help, but that is what my doctor felt was best, so I went with her judgement.

I also caved for the epidural at that point since I've heard pitocin contractions are rough and I labored peacefully overnight and had him no problem the next morning.

  • My epi stalled my labor, so then I had to have pitocin. But I only got the epi because I was progressing so quickly and just couldn't handle that much pain.

  • I went into labor because of a foley bulb catheter. 1cm-5.5cm in about an hour and needed nothing after that.

  • Water broke with our 3rd...did not need augmentation in terms of medicine...but if I had not walked around the halls for an hour or so when we first got there things would not have progressed as quickly...as they were already talking piton when I had just been walking for 20 minutes...and I was like hell no.

  • Your hospital doesn't sound vbac friendly. Of course, a lot of them aren't. I hope they don't put you on a clock, too.

  • Cervix swelled and dilation regressed from unproductive pushing, so I was given an epi to relax and then pitocin to strengthen contractions.

Yeah, it's not, but it's the only hospital in town that will even allow someone to
attempt a VBAC. The other hospitals have the "once a c-section, always a c-section" mentality. I'm thankful for the option, although at this point I know they won't help me along should issues arise. My mom had such quick, "easy" natural birth experiences (according to her). Come on body! I know you have it in you! Lol.

  • I received pitocin with my first vbac when I stalled toward the end, and to help with pushing.  ACOG allows pitocin for vbacs- just not cytotec (because you can't control it).  My second vbac I needed nothing and she was out like a rocket.  So it all depends- good luck!! I would definitely fight for my rights as a patient.

Unfortunately, although my doctor agrees with ACOG, it is supposedly the hospital's insurance company that said they won't cover them if they augment labor during a VBAC. Stupid, I know. Ugh! Still hoping I can do it on my own. I am going to start a few natural induction methods this weekend. :)

  • With DD1, I went into the hospital in labor and progressed to 7 cm when they broke my water. They gave me a "hint of pitocin" and I went right to 10 cm. I think they were just more inpatient than anything else, I think I would have just progressed more slowly on my own. I had an epi so I didn't mind.

With DD2, my water broke so I went in to the hospital. I was 5 cm when I got there and they gave me pitocin because my contractions weren't strong enough or frequent enough on their own. I was getting an epidural anyway, so it didn't bother me. Again, I probably could have waited on the pitocin and waited to see what happened on my own for a little while (I got to my hospital room at 11:30 am and she was born 4.5 hours later so I had some time to work with).
