Gassy baby

My son is almost 6 weeks old and is breast fed. He seems to be having some gas issues lately. He doesn't cry but he gets really squirmy and grunts really loud when trying to fart and poop. Just appears to be really uncomfortable. Could it be something I'm eating that is upsetting him? I have kept everything normal in my diet. No caffeine, nothing too spicy, very little veggies. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Gassy baby

  • My lil guy had the same problem. I cut back on dairy slightly just in case that was the problem. Didn't really see much of a difference. I tried gas drops and gripe water...still no change. But then I started giving him Gerber Soothe Drops (probiotic), and he finally seemed more comfortable. He still gets gassy, but it exits his body easier it seems. Unfortunately, the probiotic drops are expensive! But it's worth it not to see LO so uncomfortable.

  • I was thinking it might be the dairy. I don't drink milk straight but have had some cereal here and there and cheese too. I will cut it out and see if it helps. He thought he had the foremilk problem in the beginning bc his poop was green but now it's all normal. He seems to be draining each breast when he eats too so I think we are good there. He does eat a lot tho! He has gained 4.5 lbs since birth. Thanks for the help ladies!
  • This might be a silly question... @babycaps I eat greek yogurt that is high in protein, is this protein the same as the milk protein you refer to?
  • We FF but have major gas issues to were she screams ( come to think of it she screams way to easy when uncomfortable) doctor has us doing prune juice twice a day and it helps get the farts out ;)

1/2 oz juice mixed with 1/2 water.

Doesn't give her diarrhea either ( I was afraid it would)
  • I learned the hard way that J doesn't tolerate onion well. He occasionally gets a little gassy and fussy, but the day after I ate a bunch of onion rings with dinner was very hard on both of us.

  • My pediatrician said that those behaviors are just normal in newborns. They have a lot to figure out when it comes to how to poop and pass gas... Relaxing some muscles and tensing others. Eventually they figure it out.
  • Like PP- it's a really gassy time in general for babies. We just got through the extreme gas. My LO is almost 8 weeks and she occasionally gets really gassy but is figuring out how to get it all out herself. I do find that at each diaper change lifting her knees to her belly helps relieve a TON of farts! Lol

  • I tried the bicycle legs and it worked. He seemed to really enjoy it and he farted a bunch so win win!

My baby girl loves bicycle legs as well :). Her dad likes to play it with her at night as a game.

  • We've been having gas issues as well. We started him on probiotic drops, tried the bicycle motion (as well as clockwise belly massage), and I am cutting dairy and any gas inducing foods as PPs mentioned (onions, garlic, etc). Good luck, I know it's not easy to deal with!
  • Ah I didn't think about just having myself take a probiotic. I'll try that. Thanks!
