Girl name help, please

Yes, I know there's a board for this, and I have posted there already. But now I'm more confused than ever...

We are on team green, and we are set on our boy name (Rowan John). Our last name is two syllables, begins with M, and ends with -er. DD is Mila. For girls, we prefer names that are somewhat unique but not too odd or contrived. I really like Sienna, but it's becoming really popular by us. DH loves Claire, and though I think it's pretty, it's a little too common for me. We both like Neve (mn would be Elise), but I guess there's an issue with pronunciation (Nev vs Neeve). We already have trouble with Mila being pronounced Myla, and I don't want another issue like that (it's annoying). How would you say Neve? Is there really an issue here? And if so, any other ideas?

Re: Girl name help, please

  • I knew a little girl named Neve. Its a beautiful name - pronounced Nev. I would never think its Neeve.

I vote love for Neve Elise. Goes with Mila (pro : Meela?).

  • I would spell it Niamh, as that's the traditional spelling. Neeve is too many e's and Nev should be pronounced how it's spelt. That leaves Neve or Niamh. Your call.

  • I would pronounce Neve, like Eve with an N on the front. I laughed when I ready your comment. I too like you love names that are more unique, I gave my hubby a list of 95 names I liked and he came back with two. We decided on Claire. It's more popular than I would like but the other one was Sophia which around here is the name of like every 5th girl born. I love the middle name Elise, I think no matter what you do for a name if it's unique at all you will have a few pronounciation issues. I have a unique name and so does my sister and occasionally it's annoying but the oh I love that name comments I get more than make up for it.

  • I would always assume it's pronounced "nev". Niamh is the traditional spelling, but if you have enough trouble with people saying "myla" and are worried about Neve, I wouldn't go the traditional route.

That being said, I like Neve Elise and Neve Claire. I think either would go well with your DD' s name.

  • Thanks ladies. DH would never go for Niamh - way too confusing for those who aren't familiar with it. We would definitely pronounce it as Nev as opposed to Neeve, but I want to make sure that's what most people would do so we aren't constantly correcting everyone.

  • I would do Neve pronounced as "Nev"...like PPs have said, I think of Nev Campbell so the pronunciation is clear to me. It's pretty and goes with Mila!

    Baby #2 due 4/26/16!

  • I prefer "Nev", but I believe "Neeve" is the proper pronunciation though.

  • Oy, we may need to keep thinking. The ambiguity will drive me nuts. Let's hope this kid keeps baking for while longer so we can come up with something else!

  • I would pronounce Neve as Neev...lond "e" since the first vowel is followed by a consanant and second vowel.  (i.e. like the long "a" in plane versus plan.)  Hope that makes sense...

  • I'm also no help because I love Claire. I was dying to have a little girl named Clarity, with 'Claire' being the nn. Feel free to steal, as I'm on boy #3. :-w
  • I say Neve like Nev. Like the actress Neve Campbell from Scream.
  • I'd also say Nev because of Neve Campbell. I think the pronunciation of that name may be split along generational lines. Those of us old enough to remember Party of Five and Scream will get it!

Personally, I really like Claire and think it would go well with your DS and DD's names too.

  • Yea, Neve Campbell has got it stuck in our heads to say Nev. It is possible to see Neev. Could just get her used to both of them, then ask which she likes better when she grows up.

  • I read it is neev, despite neve Campbell.

  • I say Neev and didn't even realize Neve Campbell spelled her name like that. The traditional spelling just seems crazy. I don't understand how Neev comes from that. I never even knew that until reading it here on TB so in the real world I would be the one to butcher her name. I think Neve is beautiful.
  • Some people will always have trouble pronouncing any name. The receptionist at the chiropractor calls me Donna every.single.time. Even though when I walk in I pronounce my name for her.

  • I'd pronounce it Neev. What about Neeve? I think that would clear up most mispronunciations. But as @danabsd said, some people will mess it up, no matter what!
