One & Done: Only child

What does LO call himself/ herself?

So-- most of you already know that DD has a pretty significant speech delay, and she's in therapy for it.

Anyway-- one of the things we have asked for the therapists to work on is "naming" everyone-- so she's been calling me mommy more, and calling my H daddy and even the dog (she calls her "morma"-- dog's name is Norma).  Up until yesterday-- she had never refered to herself as her name-- Josie-- but she totally had a breakthrough.  When the therapist asked her "who are you?", DD said "oh-see."

I didn't get to see/ hear it firsthand -- H told me the story, but when I got home I asked her the same question and she repeated her name to me "oh-see".

OMG it is sofaking adorable.

Tell me what your LO calls himself?

    Nothing.  :((

He knows who he is in photos & kind of smiles & points to himself while doing his jabbering that he does but nothing verbally yet like his name or anything.
I think he was really close to saying "me" but he hasn't yet. He says "I did" so "I", I suppose. lol

He will get there-- I can totally relate to the :((

  • She calls herself beautiful. She's a bit conceited, but that's ok by me. I like that she feels that way.

When she isn't calling herself beautiful and pretty, she calls herself Lexi. When she was smaller, she said "Wexis" because she couldn't say Alexis.

And a big YAY for your DD!!!!!!!!!!!  That's so awesome!!!!

  • Congrats on the breakthrough!

These days, he mostly calls himself his first and last name, which is kind of hilarious. We have a goofy last name that people like to say so I think they use his full name at daycare a lot. Though I know some of the teachers call him Alex at school (I gave up on being annoyed by this) we only call him Alexander and I'm happy to see that's only how he refers to himself, too!

  • DD calls herself Awexis or Wexi. She's not great with L's yet. The best though is when she's all dressed up on her tiara, jewelry and play dressup shoes she calls herself Princess Awexis!
haha my Alexis was similar. I said above she used to say Wexis. She did Wexi, too.

  • He refers to himself as baby or uses me, I, mine, etc.  He's only said his name a few times when prompted.

Me, but when she first started saying her name, she'd say "Woo-bee" (Ruby) and pat her chest.  For a while, and still at times, she wouldn't allow us to say nicknames, give her silly names, or even use her middle or last name.  It was only "Ruby"!

  • He says me, i, mine and can say his name. He pats his chest too and says jack...son!
  • He also calls my mom mimi but if she doesn't respond he calls her debbie which is her first name. Then he laughs like crazy and runs away.
  • She says Kay which is her nickname :)

  • He calls himself by his name. But for a long time he used Baby instead.

  • DS has used his name for awhile, but he's starting to use I, me, my, in the correct context.

  • that is super sweet.

My kid refers to herself as Carly or Kiki. When someone asks her a question like "Are you hungry/mad/sad/tired/etc?" she usually responds with "I'm not ____, I'm Carly/Kiki" which is cute but stops being cute after the 10th time.

  • At that age, she called herself by her name - or how she could pronounce it: "Daff-ee".  It was adorable.  That was shortly after the stage where she called herself "you" and a little while before the stage where she started using "me" to refer to herself.  I love little kids learning grammer. :P

DS is pretty literal with his name too. If, for example, he's playing pretend something and roaring and you say "Are you a lion?" He looks at you like you're stupid and says "No, I'm Ray."

He has also started introducing himself to random strangers.

  • I love hearing these!  Now that DS is a little older it's fun to remember when he called himself Maxell rather than Maxwell!

When he's trying to get DH attention he will yell "Hon/Honey" because that's what I generally call DH.  If he won't respond he'll yell out "KEEF!"  (DH name is Keith).  Cracks me up every time!
  • To tell us he wanted to play peekaboo, LO used to say "Where's the baby..." And then one day he said "Where's the little boy..." instead. Kind of broke my heart.
