Reconsidering yesterday's sushi...

I threw caution to the wind yesterday and had a spicy crunchy tuna roll (raw).  It was delicious.  I've probably eaten it 496097824 times over the past ten years... it was actually a little too spicy for me and I only ate half.

Woke up with terrible sickly stomach cramps and a BAD case of the SNUR (runs spelled backwards).  I don't know if it is related to the sushi or not, but right now I'm definitely wishing I didn't eat it, just so I didn't have to be worried about it...

:-(  Day full of meetings and all I want is to be snuggling on the sofa at home.

  • :( Awww honey I know how you feel. There have been a couple of things that were on the no-no list that I ate and then felt not awesome afterwards and worried about it for days.

Sometimes I wonder if we make ourselves sick worrying about it?

The only other thing I can think of is that sometimes if food is too spicy it will do that to me too, so maybe your body isn't handling the spicy part well. I would say if it continues into tomorrow you need to call your doctor, just to be safe. Good luck to you. *hugs*

  • Hope you feel better soon. I'm sure everything is fine, but if you're worried, call your doctor for some reassurance. I also had cramps yesterday, and the runs, and I think it was just my body's way of saying "enough with this pregnancy constipation". Pregnancy wreaks havoc on your digestive system.

  • Try to stay hydrated, and if it lasts longer than the "typical" stomach bug, call your OB. I did get a bacterial infection from food eaten (fruit) when pregnant with #1, and after one pill from my OB, I was feeling a million times better. I even got this infection over a holiday then it was abweekend and wasn't seen (nor kept water down) for a week, but everything turned out fine and DD was perfectly healthy. Hope you are feeling better soon!

  • Aww, that sucks! Sometimes those cravings are so strong; I completely empathize! Try not to beat yourself up too much about it and just focus on feeling better. I think PPs are right that sometimes we may feel sick due to anxiety rather than because of what we ate; it may not even be because of the sushi roll at all!
  • That sucks, I hope you feel better soon. I hadn't cut out raw fish sushi because a lot of the research I did (did avoid too much of the high mercury fish). However, when I went without it for a few weeks then had some I had the same experience. Think injesting foods that your body doesnt recognize can cause it to react not so pleasantly. But then again, pregnancy is crazy on your body and could be just one weird day (as far as my experiences go).
  • Who knows. I'm home now - i actually left work because i was running to the bathroom so much and figured it was only going to get worse.  Luckily I can work remotely today.

It definitely isn't anxiety, it's like huge waves of nausea and cramping and then immediate expulsion of everything in my body.  TMI, sorry.  I actually think it might have been some catered food from a party we were at last night, not the sushi at all.  But I think that will be the first and last time I eat raw sushi during pregnancy.  No judgment to those who do, I just would rather not worry about it anymore.

    I hope you feel better!

I absentmindedly ate cookie dough with raw eggs during this pg and got super sick (I've been doing this forever when not pregnant and never had an issue, I guess it's true about our immune systems being lowered!) Everything's fine but I definitely will be holding off until baby is born.

  • I bet it was the spice, and not the tuna.  I had rare seared tuna this week too and felt mildly guilty, but thankfully nothing happened (and I enjoyed every bite). It's hard not to indulge a little from time to time.  I would love some sushi too, but so far I've only done the rare tuna.  I will be eating sooo much sushi once this baby is out!!

  • Well whatever it is, I just puked my guts up, violently.  Feel moderately better now.  Sigh.

  • Ugh. Glad you're feeling a bit better, hope things continue to improve!

  • I hope you feel better. As some PP have said it could be the spice aspect and not the fish.

  • I spent all of Monday night and Tuesday morning puking and on the toilet at the same time. Apparently my mom said there is a núero virus strain going around and it's brutal. I'm not sure if that's what I had as I suspected food poisoning as well but I felt much better after laying down for a long time and sipping on water, Gatorade, bits of soft pretzel and an ice pop (DH gave it yo me since it works so well for the kids. I hope you feel better and stay hydrated.

  • Yeah, this wasn't the spice.  Have you seen BRidesmaids?  It was a lot like that. Hahaha.  I eat a lot of spicy food.  BUT, I actually don't think it was the sushi either.  I think I have a weird stomach bug of some sort. Much better today but still not 100%.

  • A couple weeks ago I had the bug that's been going around. Was alot like your "bridesmaids" description. The only thing I could even eat/sort of keep down was apple sauce. Took a good 2 full days to get out of my system and another day to feel kinds normal again.

Hope you feel better soon! Also - love the "SNUR" name. Haha

  • I think I have the virus that's been going around too! Haven't been able to keep anything down for the past 24 hours, even water, and it's been coming out both ways! Trying to force water and so worried about baby!

Water is one of the worst things to drink when your puking BC its heavy on your stomach. You need to drink Gatorade or sprite, I always sip sprite when I'm sick. The carbonation makes my stomach feel better. DH drinks pedialyte for everything, dehydration and puking, you could drink that too.
  • I'm fine today ladies thank you for asking!
