Can I ask a stupid question?

Does the hospital give you a birth certificate before or after baby is born? Or do you go get one from the SS office? Everyone I've asked said they can't remember.

Mine have done it after birth. You also can check a box to have them submit for the ss#. (US of course.)

Edit: I've had one baby in Wisconsin and one in Michigan, just in case this is a state by state thing. I would ask on your hospital tour. Or at an ob appointment, they should know. :)

They give me it to fill out when I was pre-admitted. They come to take it when the baby is born and I have to pick up a copy from the city's recorder's office. The same place I picked up the marriage certificate.

When we went for our L&D tour, I didn't even think to ask. Not to mention, I was so excited to be in there, I don't remember anything the charge nurse said. :-/

  • I'm in Virginia. I filled out paperwork for the birth certificate and social security number at the hospital and they submitted it. Wednesday confession: I still haven't made the trip to Richmond to pick up his birth certificate. His social security card was mailed to me.

VA here too and I requested multiple copies in the mail.

  • I thought we got them at the hospital after birth and then totally forgot about it...until he was nearly two and we needed to have a copy with us to show at the airport to prove his age.

  • In WA, I filled out a form in the hospital and they submitted it for me as well as requested a SSN. I had to wait several weeks to request copies of the birth certificate be mailed to me (and pay for them).
  • Social Security card was sent to me, had to pick up the birth certificate at the Social Security office (i think) after I got his card

  • We filled out a form and turned it in with a check at the hospital.  Then it came in the mail from the department of vital statistics a few weeks later

  • We got some type of birth certificate from the hospital but the official one came in the mail.

  • In ohio, and Georgia, you had to file and pay to get it. They either gave you a form, or I just went to the dept of vital stats. TIP: I ordered multiple copies each time. Easier to get then at the time of origin than reorder later in life

  • I'm pretty sure ours came by mail in NY, but I've heard in MA it gets filed at the county office (or someplace) and you have to go pick it up after a certain period of time, once it's filed and ready.

  • We were given a temporary one. It was hand filled in by a nurse. We filled out a form when we got home and sent it in. A few weeks later, we received DS's birth cert in the mail. We live in Oregon.

  • You have to apply for the birth certificate. You get an official document regarding your child's birth. You send that in to get official birth certificate.

Most people thinks what the hospital gives them is a birth certificate. It is not. At least in the USA. I think it cost $20.00.

Our hospital provided the paperwork and required we give it to them before leaving, but we didn't get the birth certificate for a couple weeks (in the mail).  They also took care of the SS card for us.
