Repost from TTTC and miscarriage/pregnancy loss: Prenatal with heterozygous C677T MTHFR

I am trying to research whether it would be okay to stay on an OTC prenatal or if I should consider finding a prenatal that would be helpful with having one copy of the gene mutation. I was just told yesterday that I tested positive for the mutation after having 2 miscarriages this past year (one in May 2013 and the last 7w5d ago with a T21 baby girl). I also was told I have hypothyroidism and was started on Synthroid as of today. I also was told it would be okay to take baby aspirin. The pregnancy with our baby girl was from one IUI and a trigger shot. We will be seeing the RE again for help.

I'm sorry about your losses! I carry a different copy of mthfr than you. I do not remember much about the copy you carry. What I recall is having one copy is not as concerning as having two copies. You may need extra folic acid. I just learned there is a pnv you can buy I amazon that is specifically for those who have mthfr that I'm considering purchasing. https://www.neevodha.com/ good luck!

If you need extra folic acid, the otc won't cut it. There is only 800mcg folic acid in those. You'd want an rx one since those have 1mg. The doc may prescribe it at the 1mg dose by itself if that's what you need! GL learning more!
  • I have the exact same mutation.  I've been on Folgard (2.2 mg folic acid) my whole pregnancy (suggested by me -- the doc wasn't worried -- a huge % of the population has the heterozygous mutation and most do just fine in pregnancy).

There are more absorbable forms of folate you can get and if I'm fortunate enough to get pregnant again I might try one of those -- but my current regimen has worked fine so far so I figured I shouldn't change it.
