?s for moms who weaned due to low supply

So it is probably about time I stop hand expressing because I don't even get 1 ounce a day.

Did you go cold turkey or did you cut down on your pumping/BFing amounts? Did you eventually get full and express to reduce the discomfort? How long did it take for the milk to dry up? Any other advice you can give will be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: ?s for moms who weaned due to low supply

  • I am currently weaning right now. My supply has been pretty craptastic since my miscarriage and I just feel it is time to at least wean to two times a day since we are approaching a year. I have been doing this over the last week. I really have just not offered and I divert her attention when it looks like she wants to nurse. I would say if you are only producing an ounce you don't need to do anything or worry. Just start living life as normal. I am just cutting sessions out throughout the day. Yesterday, was the first day we just nursed in the morning and night. It was glorious.

  • I stopped a long time ago because I just wasn't getting much more than an ounce.  I quit cold turkey, never got full (I mean really never) or had any pain.  I think after a couple of days I could express a drop or two and that was it.

  • I was the same as rebaan...cold turkey...didn't get full and didn't have pain.

  • I EP for 10 months. My supply started to drop drastically around 7.5 and by 9 I was over it. I was at 4-5 pumps a day and each week cut back on one pump and added a bottle of formula until I was done and he was on formula (except for one bottle of BM from freezer stash). I haven't pumped in a month and my boobs are just now back to their normal size. I was pretty uncomfortable for about 7-10 days but I did not do anything for fear of prolonging it. Honestly, I squeezed them last night in the shower and a tiny bit of white goop came out but they feel fine and I can finally fit back into my old bras. My doctor told me to wear tight sports bras and take hot showers. Both seemed to help with discomfort
  • Thanks ladies! That's what I was thinking as well.

If you're down to 1 ounce a day, I'd go cold turkey at this point. When I stopped pumping completely, there were a few days where I hand expressed in the shower just for comfort. I probably completely dried up in 2 weeks, but after the first few days, there was very little milk.
    This is me exactly.

I was only producing just over an ounce a day as well.

My plan was to stop cold turkey. I had discomfort about 43 hours after my last planned pump. I pumped to get relief (got less than 2 oz) and that was my last pump. I dried up quick.

  • Thanks again for all the responses. And I want to clarify my love tits should be taken as a thanks for your response and not a love for low supply.

  • ...and I felt like I was missing an opportunity to extract milk.

I know exactly what you mean! I feel like even if I am giving DS a little bit of BM then it's worth expressing milk. But now I feel like the amount I get is not worth the effort I am putting in.
