morning wake/nap regression - WWYD?

hi ladies - i have 15 month old twins and i seem to have them (for the most part) on a fairly good schedule. back a couple months ago both kids were sleeping until 6am....sometimes DD would even sleep until 6:30! this was wonderful considering they went down around 6:45-7:10 at night. fast forward (yes, she had a pretty bad bout with a fever and cold back 3 weeks ago) but things seem to be regressing a bit and i'm wondering if i should do CIO (which we've done a bit in the past) or just be patient and rock her, pat her back, etc? So they've moved to one nap and are sleeping from approx. 12:45 or 1pm until 2:30 or 3pm (sometimes even later) so we've moved their bedtime to 7:15 or 7:30 (the latest). DS goes down without a problem, whereas DD (who used to nose dive into her crib and not even want to be held or rocked!) is gripping onto me for dear life both at naptime and nighttime. at night she'll pretty much exhaust herself, but naptime is a different story. we have to stand there and rub her back or else she'll stand for an hour and just cry. really odd for her!! now she did get 3 new molars in, but they've already cut through. and now she's waking at 5am and 5:15am just standing and crying. I'm not sure whether to just leave her and let her get used to this? Or just make it through and it too shall pass. Anyway just looking for a little support or "yes this happened to us and it lasts a couple weeks." DS sleeps through her crying for the most part, but especially now that she's waking so early i'm wondering if she needs an earlier bedtime...thanks!

Re: morning wake/nap regression - WWYD?

  • I don't have any advice with the twin side of things yet, but my 16 month old DS just came out of one of these, with 3 new teeth too. Ouch! It went on for about 3 weeks for him and while the going to bed is definitely back to normal, he still likes to get up at 5am... The earlier bedtime did me no good. After a week he was still sleeping his 9 hours a night, so he was just getting up earlier :( More sleep isn't necessarily the answer, just well timed sleep.

    We do:
    Wake 515-545
    Nap 11:30-2/2:30
    Bedtime 800

If you don't think it is teething related, the only other thing I can suggest is an earlier nap. If she is getting up at 5am, a 1245 nap is too late, in my house anyway. I am one of those who believes a kid is either going to sleep for 8 hours a night or 12, they have their clock just like we have ours. He makes it to 1130 tops. He is in daycare M-F but at home on the weekends naps are way differnt than bedtiem for us. I usually have a CD playing (to mimic what daycare does) and we read a book, then I lay him in his crib with his blankie and rub his back. He has never really taken a nap without some type of soothing. Can you maybe try a new cuddle toy in her crib? She is at the age when they really start connecting with a lovey or blanket.

GL with whatever you try and I hope it gets better soon!

  • We recently went through an early-rising phase. I read on my BMB that there's a Wonder Week around 15 months so I chalked up the sleep disruption to that. What we are going through right now (almost 16 months) is the 2-to-1 nap transition. Some days the boys just are not in the mood for their morning nap, so I let them fuss (or play, which is what they usually do) for up to 30 minutes and then wait another hour or two to put them down again for one long nap. But other days they'll still sleep a solid two hours in the morning. So I make sure to offer the morning nap every day just in case they need it. Your LOs might not be ready for just one nap yet and might just be overtired by naptime.....so offering an early nap just in case might be a good idea.

Good luck....sleep stuff can be so hard to figure out!
