Did I ask this already?

I looked but didn't see it so I'll ask again..

Anyone else have a LO that hits themself?  When Morgan gets mad or frustrated she hits herself in the face, not a gentle smack but full on open hand smack!  It freaks me out and I'm afraid she's going to hurt herself.  I have tried redirecting her when she does this but it just makes her angrier and she does it again.

Re: Did I ask this already?

  • Lately my boys have been smacking themselves in the head for fun. :( They used to like to bump their heads against their high-chairs, walls, etc. but now it's head-smacking. They laugh when they see my reaction and try to get them to stop.

I don't have any advice, but a friend of mine who's been a nanny for many years said something about it being normal.....she had a specific term to how it related to development but right now I'm drawing a blank.....

  • DD used to pull her hair but now she just hits me. I'm sure Morgan will figure out that hitting herself is not the way to go when you are mad. At DDs school they have this little song/saying where part of it is be kind to yourself and others. When DD hits me I tell her not nice, it's not nice to hit mommy it hurts. Maybe you can say something about it not bring nice to hit yourself, but as PP said maybe ignoring it is best too. She must know that it doesn't feel nice so she just has to find another way to express her frustration.
